I have a pool in use called Media that is I believe 4x4tb drives. I bought 3x12tb drives to replace it. I made a backup of the data in case something goes wrong. What’s the best way to migrate the pool? I currently have shares and a plex server set up to use the current pool. Ideally I’d like to replace the pool with the new drives without having to redo everything from scratch. Thanks!
Whats the actually pool layout? And what u plan for the new one (3 disks, i suppose raidz1?)
Btw, if you need to create the new pool from scratch, zfs replication will do the job. After the process end, disconnect the old pool (nor without wipe data and erase configuration) and after rename the new pool you are done. Plus old disks still contains data, in case something go wrong
They are currently in z1 and I’m going to make the new one z1. If there’s a step by step guide on how to do what you’re saying I’d appreciate a link. I’ve never done this before so I don’t know how.
Thanks!
To do that, you need a fourth 12 TB drive (or larger). Then you can replace the 4 TB drives, one by one.
Otherwise, you have to create a new pool and replicate to it.
In any case, note that raidz1 is NOT very secure in the event of hardware failure. Make sure to always have a good backup.
Ok, how would I replicate it once I create the new pool?
By using a replication task
