Dataset created - Pool does not register

Hi newbe to TrueNAS, have 24-10-1

I created a pool but not through dashboard, but through storage.
Now I have seemingly no pool, but all my disks appear to be in a dataset.

Since it is a “fresh” install, how can I eliminate the dataset and start over from the dashboard?

Any help is greatly appreciated

I am sorry - but I don’t understand what you are asking.

Please list your hardware and the output of “sudo zpool status”

Do you mean that you created a pool from the command line using a zpool create command?

And now the TrueNAS UI doesn’t show the pool?

If the above is true, then you can either:

  1. Do a zpool destroy and then create the pool again in the UI; or
  2. Export your pool in the CLI and import it in the UI (slightly preferred because you probably didn’t create the pool in the same way that the UI would have done - but this should work and be OK).

If you want advice about the best pool layout for your configuration, please copy and paste the output from the following commands (putting each in a separate </> box):

  • lsblk -bo NAME,MODEL,ROTA,PTTYPE,TYPE,START,SIZE,PARTTYPENAME,PARTUUID
  • lspci
  • sudo sas2flash -list
  • sudo sas3flash -list
  • sudo zpool status -v
  • sudo zpool import

Much appreciated Protopia,

I have not used any terminal command to create anything.

I created a pool though the storage, but it does not show on dashboard
Furthermore, It shows that it has a dataset but not a pool, and does not offer the disks for a pool (all of them were added to the first pool).

If I understand you correctly, I have to connect to my server through ssh (remote terminal). This is something I wanted to avoid so far, and have to configure its SSH login first, and enable SSH.

Then I have to install an SSH app on my PC and then learn how to identify my server through it, and only then perform any kind of cmdln sequence.

If i’m seeing things straight please let me know, (and correct or add steps as needed), and if I’m wrong, and there’s a simpler way, I’d appreciate your guidance in doing so.

My HW is G25 (6-cores, 12 threads) w 64GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB NVMe (OS) & 6x 2.5" External SSD rack ran from the Second NVMe slot while drawing power from the SATA power cable slot.

My HW is MSI G25, w 64GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB NVMe + 6x2.5" SSD external ran from NVME-SATA3 converter & powered by the SATA3 power supply fed to the external rack of the SSDs. All work fine, with SMART OK.

No you can get a command line in the Web UI in System Settings / Shell.

I am unclear what you mean when you say “I created a pool though the storage”.

Please post screenshots of what your TrueNAS is showing.

Thank you kindly Protopia,
I just used it to check if the dataset is an active pool, using ‘sudo zpool status’
It hows that the pool exists and is active, and now I understand, looking at the dashboard, that it does appear. just above the ‘create pool’ sign.

Now I have to figure out a widespread issue with not being able to install the file manager app, and/ or how to create VMs.

will this work with truenas!? anyone?

What do you mean by NVMe-SATA3 converter?
Do you mean something that looks like?

Exactly.
Actually, I re-installed the OS, then realized (after setting the pool), that I had to also add a dataset, (a subset of the “root” dataset) which is good for SMB or Virtualization… - So I got this in the bag by now.

Also, the power I draw from the single SSD power cable split in two, and fed through 4-pin connectors to the two parts of the 6xSSD rack.
It seems to work fine now.

BUT I have to try and learn even more about TrueNAS since now I cannot login to Shell through GIU as I could beforehand, and also, the 1st V machine I created seems not to be able to run GUI for installation.

This thread seems to lurch from topic to topic, without anything ever being resolved - first a question about restarting his storage layout, then about whether his SATA controllers are suitable, and now an issue of whether his power distribution to drives is suitable, an unconcerned statement about how the TrueNAS UI no longer has a shell, and an expectation of having a GUI screen to install VMs.

The OP is not listening to the concerns being expressed by more experienced members of the community and is in danger of taking what might be a fundamentally flawed build into production, putting his data at risk and quite possibly ending up back here asking for us to help him rescue his data.

Don’t rightly know if I’m the OP in question.
The HW works fine.

HOWEVER, it does not recognize my nVidia card (GTX1070M), and I could not find a compatibility list thus far.
Also, I cannot force it to install it from shell.

My other issue now is the fatal permission problems stemming from the ACL, when trying to establish my first virtual machine.

I tried several ACL options which include letting ‘full access’ to the machine, but so far no joy.

This is using my own “user” - I disabled both ‘root’ and ‘admin’ default accounts, as a safety measure, and have given my user admin capabilities.

I hope this addresses your concerns. I have non as far as the HW and power since I have no issues with both, i.e., no faulty equipment no old/legacy equipment, and no power-outage indicating PSU insufficient.
As for the power distribution, it seems to work fine, since my OS is on the NVMe, while the other slot is used just for DATA, and the power is drawn from a separate dedicated source within (that of the SATA3 connector).
I also did not get any responses concerning these problems so it might have not been my thread at all.
