ESXi with Broadcom P411W-32P passthrough not showing drives in TrueNAS Scale

I’m running ESXi-7.0U3 directly on a server with an AMD EPYC 9654P CPU. I have 2 Micron 7450 PRO NVMe SSDs attached directly to the motherboard via U.2 ports and another 8 Micron 7400/7450 PRO NVMe SSDs (2 are 7450s and 6 are 7400s) attached via a Broadcom P411W-32P. I have TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.4 running as a VM in ESXi. In ESXi I have passed through the Broadcom card and 2 of the SSDs attached to it but TrueNAS doesn’t seem to be able to access them. They appear when running lspci -vvv but not when running lsblk -a (command outputs included below). Looking at the kernel log I found nvme erros nvme nvme0: Removing after probe failure status: -19 when it was trying to enable the NVMe SSDs (full kern.log included below). I’ve googled this failure but I’m not having any luck with some of the solutions which were typically to do with issues when running other OSes and no mention of a Broadcom P411W-32P.

This configuration works completely fine when running TrueNAS on the bare metal, not virtualized through ESXi. All the drives connected via the Broadcom P411W-32P can be used in a pool. Additionally when virtualized through ESXi the SSDs directly attached to the motherboard passthrough to the TrueNAS VM perfectly fine and they can be used as part of a pool. This leads me to believe it is entirely an issue with the passthrough of the Broadcom P411W-32P.

Does anyone have any idea what is going wrong here or how to solve this? I appreciate this is a niche configuration.

I don’t think you should pass the PCIe switch itself: It’s not a controller.
Beside, if you pass the switch and two of eight drives attached to it, what happens of the remaining six drives?

I’ve tried it where only drives are passed through and not the switch and its still the same.

In the scenario you mention the over drives are still available and accessible to ESXi.

Is there a reason to use an EOL version of TrueNAS?

Perhaps a newer kernel would work better?

That was purely a mistake that I had not noticed.

I just downloaded and tried TrueNAS-SCALE-24.04.2.2 and same result.

I also tried the beta version TrueNAS-SCALE-24.10-BETA.1 with the same result again. Although no nvme nvme0: Removing after probe failure status: -19 error in the beta version.
