TrueNAS keeps randomly crashing

Hi Forum,
I have a TrueNAS system with 6 SATA HDD as raidz2 pool and one nvme SSD as boot drive.

The system is randomly hanging, not reachable via network and also console is blank and does not respond. My first guess was that it is related to the onboard SATA ports, so I installed a NVME to SATA board and connected all 6 SATA drives to it.

But it does not seem to be the probem.

I had this since the first install (25.04) throughout the current version. It’s unpredictable, some times the system is up for 1 or two weeks and sometimes a few days only.

“last reboot” shows a lot of boots as “still running”, I guess there are the crashes:

How can I find out, what’s the reson for the crashes?

Welcome to the forums.

Can you please share the hardware specifications of the system you’re running TrueNAS on? Without these specifications, it’s not possible to start diagnosing possible problems with your system.

Also, if possible, can you please share your dmesg output, since it might contain some valuable information prior to crash.

I would strongly consider to test stability of the system with a memtest, rather than chasing the rabbit down the hole :smile: This exclude fast a lot of bad things

Given the random crashes, my first bet would be RAM-related. I’d buy the paid version of memtest and hammer the board / RAM through a couple of rounds to see if something comes up.

It’s something I’d do with every new motherboard / stick of RAM given how much unhappiness a bad RAM stick can spread. Hopefully, the RAM is ECC and the motherboard supports same?

Don’t forget that after a MemTest86+ (or the paid version), run it for 5 complete passes (1 is never enough, more is better, 10 is better than 5 if you get my meaning but I recommend 5 minimum), then to run Prime95 (or similar) for at least 4 hours to heat up that CPU and motherboard, ensuring it is still stable.

Great point. Your NAS may be suffering from some heat related issues as well. At some point I need to run this test… can it be run while TrueNAS is also operating? Or is it a program-on-a-USB-stick like memtest?

I do not think this is part of TrueNAS, and I kind of doubt it would be. I use “The Ultimate Boot CD” (UBCD) which has both the memtest86+ and Prime95 or mersenne for a CPU stress Test.

There are only so many tools we have that can stress test hardware, these are the most common.

I would also say, run these tests with the power supply fully loaded, meaning all the hard drives you plan to install, graphics cards, anything that pull power should be connected. This would be an attempt to test the stability of the power supply as well as it can cause errors to occur.

Yeah, the only reason I ask is that I’d love to do it while also executing a scrub… to maximize heat and power production and see what the fans and the PSU can do.

It appears that the program stress can be run from inside a VM. I might try that for fun the next time my NAS is idle. Then initiate a scrub also and watch temps w/some popcorn.

You can also toss the system into developer mode and add the program to the OS. That is always another option, just for testing purposes. The system would remain that way until you re-installed or upgraded TrueNAS. I’m not sure how well a VM would utilize the CPU resources.

If you do try a VM, please post your results as to how well it worked.

While many people push the N100 and similar processors beyond the documented maximum amount of memory, which does work some of the time. There are times when specific memory DIMMs don’t work.

Even if the paid version of MemTest were to say the DIMM was good, I’d still be wary of it. Buying a 16GB DIMM might be expensive today. But, what do you want, cutting edge extra memory, and reduced reliability? Or lower memory size, and stability?


PS: My take on Intel’s note “(dependent on memory type)” is that if you use power hungry memory, you might need to use even less, like 8GBs. Not that you could support more than 16GBs.

Few folk investigate CPUs deeply, the sellers of these boards routinely advertise 32GB of RAM capacity, preferably made by Samsung. The Amazon link the OP posted is no different.

I reckon this is a bit of a prisoners dilemma for sellers
also - ie if they only advertise 16GB RAM capacity, buyers will pivot to sellers of motherboards that advertise 32GB RAM capacity, thinking those boards are somehow different.

Concerning the 16/32GB topic: I’ve asked the board manufacturer and the reply was, that the N100 will work with 32GB.

I had already RAM issues with 16GB Corsair RAM and the manufacturer tolt me to use Samsung. I’ve had 16GB Samsung RAM and this also got me the random crashes.

I’ll try the memory and cpu stress test, thanks for the hint.

Maybe I’ve should have listened to my grandparents, who said “We have no money to buy cheap.” and paid a bit more for a better board…

The last time I was in this boat, I was running opnsense virtualized on a Chinese n150 box. I chose promox and zfs. Then I chose opnsense on zfs as my main image.

The root problem was that promox was letting zfs do what it does and cache everything, eating resources. On the host OS and the guest. So within a few hours it turned into a resource race and lost connectivity, just acting totally hosed until a reboot set everything straight again. It was just hard to get them fight and fail at the same time so I could troubleshoot it.

I’m assuming you’re running bare metal on the hardware, not sticking it on top of promox right?
