FreeBSD 13.3 support ending in December 2024

Looks like the new schedule FreeBSD is introducing will shorten the life of CORE even more.

Thoughts?

But with 13.4 and 13.5 the jails should run into April of 2026.

Which means, ideally, that we can continue to use jails on the 13.3 host. (Assuming there are no breaking changes, as we had experienced with 13.3 jails on a 13.1 host.)

Historically the jails have been problematic. I.E. they stop providing 13.3 packages, and now you need a 13.4/5 host to get those 13.4/13.5 packages, since they won’t run properly on a 13.3 base any further.

This is going to be a bit challenging for us on the TrueNAS side. Historically speaking its been a real beast to maintain stability across the FreeBSD dot releases… That’s why we’ve been very conservative about upgrading base OS versions, even long before SCALE came onto the scene. It’s one thing to compile and shove software out the door. 90% of the work comes after that to make it stable and enterprise grade as a storage appliance. This new schedule is potentially going to make that even harder, if historical tends with regard to quality and regressions are any indication.

Anyway, something we’ll keep an eye on and see how it impacts us on the CORE side.

Supposedly (“supposedly”) there shouldn’t be an issue running an XX.b jail with XX.b packages on an XX.a host.

Yep, that is the historical goal. Reality all-too-often hasn’t matched that
