Goldeye version notes for disk management giving mixed signals

So I’m reading the Goldeye version notes here. Under the Disk Management section, they talk about how they are changing how disk monitoring works inside TrueNAS, including the migration of automated SMART test schedules to CRON jobs. In this same section, they say that the Scrutiny app is a good way to continue monitoring your drives. In their description of the Scrutiny app, they say that Scrutiny is capable of “automated SMART test scheduling”. Is this statement a lie? From all the Googling and reading I have been doing, Scrutiny does not have the ability to run SMART tests on a schedule.

That being said, I am now starting to wonder what is the best way to continue performing automated SMART tests on a schedule. Will CRON jobs suffice? Or is there a better tool/app in the wild that specializes in this sort of thing?

@joeschmuck ‘s Multi-Report is a bit of a golden standard around these parts.

You’re right, that was misstated. Not an intentional lie but a misunderstanding of what Scrutiny supports. It will provide active monitoring and historical data based on previous data, including as far as I know integrating self-test data run separately, but will not itself schedule short or long tests.

That description is being updated.

Ah yeah, I forgot that Multi-Report is capable of routine SMART tests. I do already have Multi-Report running on a weekly basis, but just to get an email about the status of my drives. I did some reading, and it seems like the proper way to do routine SMART tests is to configure the script to run these tests and then invoke the script via CRON every day. Is that correct? What is the typical configuration/schedule for running Multi-Report to exercise all of its abilities?

Also, if I end up invoking Multi-Report every day, is there any point to running Scrutiny? I don’t care much for fancy UIs or reports when dealing with drives. I just want to know about a dying drive as soon as possible.

I’ll be honest, I don’t use Joe’s script, may be better to ask those questions on his post.
