i’m placing my new NAS with 4 HDD in a room nearby my bedroom and i want to know if there is a possibility to keep HDDs still if not needed to avoid, or at least to reduce the noise.
i will use Truenas Scale - i will make the migration in the evening.
You can set the spin down by GUI or using the community resource.
Very good for cut power consumption, hate and noise but take care about frequently spin up/down can damage your disks on long period
Personally tried the script, and got problem setup smart test too (smart not start during spin down)
To spin down HDs first be sure to move the system dataset to the boot-pool which can be done in the Truenas GUI.
Advise you not to run any truenas apps on the HD pool–not even the app catalog because those services will keep them active.
There is a spin down script to run at the shell prompt but I’ve had success using the drop down menus on the GUI’s storage/disks screen. Strangely the Seagate drives require different entries than the WD drives. But then that’s my system.
