[HELP] Jellyfin fatal playpack error

Hi everyone,

this is my very first post here, and also my very first server build ever.
I’m a complete beginner when it comes to almost everything not just TrueNAS but Networking and Servers in General. I’ve mostly learned through YouTube tutorials and with the help of ChatGPT.

So first of all, thank you in advance for any help or patience with my questions!

:jigsaw: My Issue

I’ve successfully installed Jellyfin on TrueNAS SCALE and got most of it running fine. However, every time I try to play a video, I get the following error message:

Playback Error
Playback failed due to a fatal player error.

I’m wondering if this could be related to hardware transcoding not working properly or smt. I´ve tried enabeling it in the settings but it´s just not working.

:gear: My System

Here are the specs of the machine my NAS is running on:

CPU: AMD FX-6350
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16 GB DDR3 @ 1600 MHz

:mag: What I’ve Tried

  • Enabled GPU support in TrueNAS App Settings
  • Assigned the GTX 1060 GPU to the Jellyfin App
  • Enabled hardware acceleration (NVENC) inside the Jellyfin dashboard
  • Restarted the App and TrueNAS several times
  • Still getting the same playback error on every video (browser + iPhone App)

Does anyone have an idea what I might be missing?
Could this be an issue with GPU permissions or the transcoding configuration?
Any help or troubleshooting steps would be really appreciated… Thanks again for your time and support! :pray:

Your hardware is outside Jellyfin’s minimum recommendations.

Well that just about explains it i guess =D Thank you!
I´ve build this server just to test it out to see if i like it… I will invest in better Hardware very soon! :slight_smile:

If you’re sticking to “older” desktop hardware, I advise using an Intel X299 platform.

They use PCI Express 3.0, but have more lanes than typical motherboards:

This means you can install more PCIe SSDs, a graphics card, and maybe a 10Gb/s network card too, without them bottle-necking each other.

Speaking of a graphics card, I advise using a discrete Intel Arc, my A310 has no trouble transcoding 4K movies.
