Help! Woke up to the slowest and checksum errored TrueNas Scale I ever had

Hi folks

Yesterday I installed an SSD on my server and booted up the system, which was running fine. Since it was late at night, I simply added the SSD as hardware, planning to configure it in the interface the next day.

Today I’m experiencing very slow speeds along with 9 checksum errors on one of the disks. When transferring files via SMB, I notice unusual spike behavior, and during each spike, there’s a strange clattering sound coming from one of the disks. The SMART tests report everything as fine. The only change I made in the interface was physically removing the SSD from the system. I don’t think it is a network problem, the server acts also as a network switch and the connection is as fast and as reliable as always.

Yeah that sounds like a failing disk. Even if SMART doesn’t detect it.

I don’t think it’s related to your SSD at all.

“Strange clattering sounds” are never good - I’ve seen this with disks resetting the heads while trying to read, because it’s getting errors and trying to fix this by going back to start, then repeating the read.

Identify the serial number of the failing disk, and replace it. Caution while doing so - you are on raidz1, and if you offline the wrong disk, you’re at risk of losing data.

Run the following commands and post the output here (each in a separate </> box) to try to determine the failing drive:

  • lsblk -bo NAME,MODEL,ROTA,PTTYPE,TYPE,START,SIZE,PARTTYPENAME,PARTUUID
  • sudo zpool status -v
  • sudo zpool import

Ok. Some sort of disk errors - possibly a failing drive.

Please run sudo smartctl -x /dev/sda (assuming you haven’t rebooted since the last commands were run) and post the results so we can see whether the drive itself is reporting any issues (or whether this is something other than the drive itself).

You said you had 9 checksum errors, but the zpool status shows only 1 - any idea why?

So we have three separate symptoms:

  1. Slow performance - could be several causes, but assuming disk related could be a controller issue, a cabling issue or a drive issue.

  2. Drive clicking - but that could be seeks unless you know it sounds abnormal cf. how it usually sounds. But it could indicate a failing drive.

  3. Checksum 9 or 1 errors - which is a pretty low number, and could be a failing drive or a cabling issue or just a one-off glitch.

The SMART output doesn’t show any issues with the drive showing the errors.

So at this point I cannot point to anything definitive.

Perhaps you can disconnect and reseat your memory sticks, your SATA cables and any PCIe cards and see if that helps. And I think you can probablythen do a zpool clear and a scrub and see what happens.

I believe the server restarted multiple times—once due to a power outage and the rest while I was troubleshooting.

The checksum errors fluctuated: they started at 9, dropped to 3, then spiked to 20 before returning to 1. I have no idea why (except once, when I tried zpool clear, as advised in other threads). I also tried unplugging and reconnecting both the SATA and power cables.

Interestingly, the slow performance and drive clicking disappeared a few hours ago, right after the error count returned to 1.

Please run sudo smartctl -x /dev/sdX on all other HDDs and post results so we can confirm that they are not the cause of the clicking noises.

It might also be worth running simultaneous SMART long tests on each drive and confirm they run clean.

Seagate FARM log (GP Log 0xa6) supported [try: -l farm]

The system just returned slow without me doing anything and then got back up to speed. I ran a simultaneous SMART long test on all drives and nothing was found by the tests.

At a glance these look ok too.

Maybe it is the power supply? You said you had a power outage, maybe it got damaged?

Recently I added 2 hdds to my NAS and that apparently put my power supply over the edge. In theory it should have had enough power.

There were ZFS errors and I could also hear clicking noises, like a drive failing to spin up properly. I put in a new power supply and also discarded the cable adapter I used, and now it works fine.
