How worried should I be when getting ATA errors during a scrub

Today was monthly scrub day for my HDD pool which is a 5x 4TB IronWolf RAIDZ1.

And today I got several “ATA errors” during the scrub e.g.

Device: /dev/sda [SAT], ATA error count increased from 1 to 2.
2025-05-17 11:26:14 (Europe/Lisbon)

I didn’t initially realise that these happened during a scrub (suggesting bitrot), so I started another scrub before I realised this.

So how worried should I be by this small number of (recovered) scrub errors?

At face value, i see nothing wrong with the drives. Please keep in mind that I’m using a small phone, not my computer right now. But needless to say, i don’t see any UDMA CRC errors. I do see Reported Uncorrect = 3. Maybe that is it.

Did you update TrueNAS or make any changes since the last scrub?

You might run another scrub when you find the time to see if this happens again. And of course a SMART long test in sda.

After the scrub, make sure you run clear.

No - I did upgrade from 24.04 to 24.10.2.2 a couple of days ago - the scrub which ran yesterday and created these errors was the first since this upgrade.

As soon as I saw these errors I ran another scrub which apparently repaired 256KB (or 16 records on a 5x RAIDZ1) but no more ATA errors and no bad files or metadata. So I just ran a zpool clear.

It looks like each drive experienced one or several URE. Individually, these would be non-events, thanks to ZFS using redundancy to correct. As a whole, however, that all of the drives experienced at least one of these events, with many—but not all—clustered around 14000 hours is somewhat concerning. Is there a fundamental design flaw with this model of drive?

I see no cause for immediate action… but I’d made sure that there is a good backup and that replacement drives are ready.
