Beauty - I think you’re golden. Considering the ‘VALUE’ was increasing from 74 all the way to 79 & the treshold is 44, I’d argue it is going in the right direction (specifically for Seagate drives).

Currently the raw value is at 0, no defect logs, no Sata errors, no pending/reallocated sectors.

so this means good news?

I’d argue it is good news, basically if the rate is above threshold for these fields, you’re good. Threshold is 44 & you’re moving away from it.

To add a little knowledge to the topic:
You have a few “Rate” values that will go up and down in the “VALUE” column for the respective data.

These rate values are determined over hundred of thousands of accesses. I think the value is something like 10 to the 12th power, could be higher. A very big number.

Also, when a drive is asked to read a sector of data, the drive may decide to read the next few sectors being proactive to make access to the data faster, BUT if that data is not requested by the computer, then these can be counted as a seek or read failure by some manufacturers and are part of the RATE value.

Due to the high number of transactions the RATE values use to calculate the error rate, moving the needle to the good or bad side takes time. It will not change from 60 to 90 overnight, but it could be weeks before it recovers. It could change faster to the bad side if the drive is really bad. But you also have other indicators in the SMART data that are likely to warn you of pending doom.

@Fleshmauler provided you the trick to read a Seagate drive properly (when yo have those wildly changing numbers) and you then saw a zero value.

Glad you didn’t just change the drive out.

BTW, what version of TrueNAS are you running? I don’t trust signatures all the time and would rather not assume.

On the topic of Seagate, is there any way in TrueNAS to make use of the advertised “IronWolf Health Monitoring” (IHM) that’s supposedly built into some of these drives, or is that only available under some licensing deal?

I personally do not know that answer. But it is a good question. You might be able to read through the TrueNAS source files to see, but Python is not something I know yet.

With that said, you can download the seagate seachest tools from GitHub and then compile it, so it’s free. At least free to individual users. I don’t know if a license is required for a business to use it. But to compile it, you need to jump into developer mode and the changes you make will not survive a TrueNAS update. If you wanted to use them. But I do not know if it has a daemon like smartd running in the background to tell the OS there is a problem.
