Insufficient replicas on RAID-Z2?!

I’m using a ZimaCube Pro with two pools: One pool of four nvmes and another pool of 6 SATA drives.

So my nvme RAID was acting up again and disconnected and a reboot of the server usually works so I did a reboot through the web GUI and the server wouldn’t come up after about 20 minutes so I hard rebooted and it came right up. My nvme pool was fine but now my main pool, with my SMB shares, showed 6 disks exported. I don’t remember exporting any disks and when I try to import the pool, I get this error (using -f doesn’t make a difference.):

cannot import 'Taranis': insufficient replicas
        Destroy and re-create the pool from
        a backup source.

I then saw some other posts and ran commands that was asked of others:

It says the pool is online here but it’s clearly offline in the Scale GUI and when I try to import the disks, it wants to make a new pool, which of course would wipe the drives.

As this is a Z2 array, I highly doubt more than two drives died at once. None of the drives have failed a SMART test.

What can I do from here?

Yes, it is confusing for the zpool import command to state that the pool state is ONLINE. But, in this context, it just means there appears to be no problems. Meaning ZFS can read it’s label on all 6 disks without errors.

Collect SMART data against the 6 drives looking for one that has problems. Post here in CODE tages.
smartctl -x /dev/sdX
Replace X with each drive letter.

Also, full hardware layout is helpful. Including how the disks data cables are wired to the computer.

Thanks for the quick reply! I’m sorry… I’m not sure how the drives are wired to the motherboard. It doesn’t say so in the specifications. Looking at a teardown video, it seems to be an EDP connector feeding directly to the motherboard.

I don’t see anything wrong with the SMART output, but I am no expert.

Something has to be seriously wrong for a RAID-Z2 to have trouble with 3 disks. (Their are 2 disks of redundancy… so loss of 2 disks would still allow pool import.)

I have to say that ZFS is absolutely pants at explaining the details of what is stopping a pool from importing. When zpool import says it is importable and zpool import Taranis says “Insufficient replicas” that really isn’t a lot of help.

But my guess at this stage is that some of the ZFS labels have been corrupted and that is why ZFS cannot find all the drives.

It is possible that one of the following commands might work:

  • zpool import -R /mnt -d /dev/disk/by-partuuid
  • zpool import -f -R /mnt Taranis
  • zpool import -f -R /mnt -d /dev/disk/by-partuuid

If not, perhaps also worth testing to see whether importing with rollback would work

  • zpool import -F -n -R /mnt Taranis
  • zpool import -F -n -R /mnt -d /dev/disk/by-partuuid

But if not I would guess that the next step is to understand the detailed hardware configuration and start to look at the ZFS labels to see how we might tell ZFS where all the disks are:

  • lsblk -bo NAME,MODEL,ROTA,PTTYPE,TYPE,START,SIZE,PARTTYPENAME,PARTUUID

Most of the data that would be lost is only 2-3 months since last backup. I was struggling to use the Megasync app and couldn’t get it working so the backup is on a local USB drive… it would just be a pain to rebuild it.

So if I’m at the point of formatting and start over, please tell me. I’m just concerned as I thought I had a robust array and it just shat itself for no reason it seems. I’d rather know what happened…

Not sure what you mean: There’s no “RAID 10” with ZFS, and with 6 drives you have the good number for a stripe of three 2-way mirrors or two 3-way mirrors—the latter might be marginally more resilient than raidz2, at the cost of capacity.

I suspect you have an issue with one or more labels. Take a look with

/sbin/zdb -l /dev/sdN

where N is your specific disk. Note that TrueNAS creates a partition map and uses partition 1, so that is where TrueNAS created zpools will have their labels.

There should be 4 labels on each device, labels 0 and 1 are at the start of the device and 2 and 3 at the end.

Note that zdb only lists the contents of duplicate labels once. Use zdb -lll to list the contents of all labels (even if they are identical).

If you believe Richard Ellings MTTDL (mean time to data loss) calculations, then 3-way mirrors are more resilient than RAIDz2. Simple MTTDL calculations, such as Richard’s are just that, simple. They do not cover all failure aspects as a Monte Carlo simulation over time is required for that, but I like the simple MTTDL as a comparison point between vdev layouts.
