SMART 'failed to read smart attribute data' alert on scale

running scale 24.10.2 on two different machines, each updated over time from freenas (core).

the same model hard drives in both. in fact half of the drives in the problem server were moved to the newer one, and they work flawlessly there.

im getting the following errors on the one (older) server emailed to me:
• Device: /dev/sdi [SAT], failed to read SMART Attribute Data.
• Device: /dev/sdg [SAT], failed to read SMART Attribute Data.
• Device: /dev/sde [SAT], failed to read SMART Attribute Data.
• Device: /dev/sdh [SAT], failed to read SMART Attribute Data.
• Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], failed to read SMART Attribute Data.
• Device: /dev/sdf [SAT], failed to read SMART Attribute Data.

so lots of failure it seems, sometimes just one, sometimes a cluster like above. but it happens more than once per week.

but when i do a long smart test, they pass. and i installed the scrutiny container and that shows nothing but ‘passed’ on each of the drives.
and disk health in the storage dashboard shows failed smart tests 0

the second server is set up almost exactly the same, with no similar errors

any ideas or what to do to debug whats causing this? would a new install help any? this unit is only used for backups and testing anyway, so that wouldnt be a huge problem. everything else works fine (except for a smb issue im working through)

thanks for any ideas

How are drives connected on system that is alarming? Any chance for hardware details?

both systems use a broadcom host buss adapter LSI 9305-16i for all but boot drive connections.
motherboard is supermicro X10DRL

drives that are alarming are seagate ST16000NM001G. they came from the other nas and never had an issue there; in fact they never had an issue here either until i upgraded to truenas scale from core. and if i look at them individually the specs show no bad sectors etc…

Do this and provide the results:
smartctl --scan
smartctl -x /dev/sde
Next
smartctl -d auto /dev/sde
And if the scan shows something like scsi, try smartctl -d scsi /dev/sde

And maybe a few more drives if you like.

Edit: what firmware is on your hba?

Output of either sas2flash -list or sas3flash -list might provide insight. As Joe said, maybe it is firmware related on the HBA. Maybe also a faulty cable - would try a reseat depending on results of firmware readout or swap if you got a spare on hand.

see below

Note; i tried the same command on the other server that has the exact same hba card (newer) but it says no LSI SAS adapters found

The drives look good and you can communicate with them without translation so :+1:

I cannot answer about the HBA firmware, only because I choose to not be involved in something I do not have so I leave those things to people who have personal experience in that area.

Something about the error message you are getting, it says is is using [SAT] which is SCSI to SATA Translation, which has me thinking, should it be that mode? would you try smartctl -a -d sat /dev/sde and let us know the results. I don’t need the full output if it generates a typical SMART output, but if it generates something else, an error message, post that message. I hope it does have an error message, that would solve the mystery. Then it is a bug report, assuming the HBA firmware isn’t the issue.

If not mistaken, for SAS9305-16i the latest firmware version is 16.00.12.00 - might be worth updating & seeing if it fixes things. I’m mildly worried that the other server ain’t reporting to sas3flash… but if it is working then I guess steady as she goes.

Also I’m going to make an assumption that since you got a server board that you have this in a rack with solid airflow - but if not, never hurts to slap a fan onto that thing to make sure it ain’t overheating/check thermal goop.

If that doesn’t help? Hopefully output of Joe’s command gives him insight that can be of use towards helping you.

That SMART output looks fine and I believe is fine. You forced SAT and it responded as it should, no error messages. This tells me that TrueNAS is seeing the drives properly.

Maybe it is the HBA firmware, that was my first thought.

With that said, does the system work properly with the exception of those specific error messages? If YES, then you do not need to flash the firmware right away, you have time to backup your data (if you need to), you can also opt to use Multi-Report and Drive-Selftest to monitor and test your drives, until you are ready to update the firmware.

I’m not trying to peddle the scripts I maintain, I only want to give you options until the actual issue is fixed. What it does not provide you in a default setup is real-time monitoring of the drives, however there is a feature to run the script and only send an email upon error detected. That could be run every 15 minutes in a CRON, as an example. Again, this would be a bandaid until you could reflash the HBA, if that is what you plan to do. And the script may be more of a pain to setup than you desire. Oh yes, if it is a company machine, they may not want third party scripts on it.

Let us know what is happening, I’m curious if it is the firmware.

Thanks for all the guidance, it really helps since im at a loss…

this machine is for backup and app/virtualization testing only so no issues running whatever makes sense to sort this out

otherwise everything works fine. i wouldnt even though there was an issue but for the errors thrown by the os (and a holdover permissions problem i cant sort out which seems to be caused by a change to the root dataset which doesnt seem to be allowed any more)

ill take a look at reflashing the hba; i did want to see what version the newer machine was on first, but that one doesnt report it even exists so there is that…

i just flashed the hba firmware without incident to 16.00.12.00 so we will see if that resolves the issue; cant hurt

now i have to figure out why the sas3flash -list command doesnt show anything on the newer box… its supposed to be exactly the same hba, just different/newer firmware since it is about 2 years newer

Hope it works. Best of luck to you getting the other one to report. It is odd.

Just make sure you flashed it to (IT) not (IR). As for the second system, any output from dmesg | grep -e LSI? At least we’ll know if the card is detected at all (don’t ask me how it is working if it isn’t detected) - I mean, if it is working fine, then maybe best leave it alone…

its in IT mode and seems to work fine

the output from dmesg | grep -e LSI works on the old machine and shows LSISAS3224 and the firmware version

but it doesnt show anything on the new one, even after a reboot. i wrote to the integrator asking them whats going on since the invoice shows the LSI hba, same model as the older one.

i wonder if they substituted something else and didnt tell me? they did the original configuration so no reason to question the hw; i just plugged the drives in, and a year or so later changed out the cpu’s. no reason to look at the hba, but perhaps ill open it up and take a peek…

i did some poking, using dmesg | grep -e hba to see any differences between the two boxes

the old one that shows the LSI entry shows just one port:

[ 3.873940] mpt3sas_cm0: hba_port entry: 000000006fd78e47, port: 255 is added to hba_port list

whereas the new system that doesnt show the LSI entry shows multiple ports:

does this mean anything?

I’m sure it does - but it is entirely beyond me. If you got both systems working, then I’d personally call it a day & wait for SI to get back to you with details.

…at a certain point ‘well enough’ becomes the golden standard

i opened up both boxes just to check; the old box is indeed a 9305-16i, but the newer box is a avago 9400-16i if that makes a difference.

not what i was told, but seems to be the same specs or maybe a little better so no problem there.

i then did a storcli show and it does output the hba info that way:

Ctl Model AdapterType VendId DevId SubVendId SubDevId PCI Address

0 HBA 9400-16i SAS3416(B0) 0x1000 0xAC 0x1000 0x3000 00:65:00:00

so the model number matches up with the stickers on the board and does show up with this tool. this is a mystery…

one more thing; the number of controllers that comes back is 0 and no extra info for the old system where sas3flash works, but 1 for this system along with the above info labeled IT System Overview. so it shows up just in a different place?

[edit] turns out this is the way the 9400 is supposed to work, so i guess this mystery is solved! you just need to use storcli on the 9400

thanks for all the help, should know if the firmware update solves the erroneous smart errors in a couple days

There is a post on the older forums, if not mistaken something like the following might get you some useful info storcli /c0 show all

ServeTheHome forums suggests using broadcom’s utility, but unless you’re in the mood to take it out, plug it into a windows system, download a utility from broadcom, etc. it might be worth letting it ride until you get a problem.
