How do I load files into datasets with the Apps share type?

Hi all. Super new to TrueNAS and trying to get my datasets set up. I’ve looked all over and haven’t really found a consistent answer for this, so any help would be lovely.

I’m running TrueNAS Community Edition v25.10 on a UGREEN DXP4800+. It’s primarily for syncing files between computers, but I may as well make it a media server. Not using Plex or anything especially heavy.

So how do I load files into datasets that will be used by apps? Syncthing seems easy enough, just get the syncs set up and then let the app transfer everything. But what about movies and media for Jellyfin?

The YT tutorials I’ve watched say to set the dataset up as SMB and then load files over the SMB connection. At the same time, everybody also seems to say that anything that will be used by apps needs to be in a dataset with the Apps share type to avoid permission conflicts. (Literally got both those answers from two different Lawrence Systems videos, lol.) Not sure if the Apps preset is a new thing, but I’m a bit confuzzled how I’m supposed to load TB’s worth of files without direct access to the dataset through a share.

So bottom line, how DO you load files for use by apps? Do you laugh at danger and make an SMB dataset? Is there an app like File Browser on steroids that makes it easy to transfer in bulk? Do you import off a USB drive plugged into the NAS? Do the share types not even matter and I’m just missing something? Please send help.

APPS preset was added later. The primary guarantee there is that the APPS user 568 will have permissions to the dataset. It also will work with SMB, just make sure to add permissions at some point for your SMB users.

Okay, that makes sense. Went back and found the Lawrence Systems video. It’s the one about setting up Syncthing on TrueNAS. I think I mistook him saying it’s not a good a idea to use SMB and sync on the same dataset for saying it’s not a good idea to use SMB and Apps on the same dataset.
