HPE gen9/10 8sff SAS cage Power layout / connector

Hello,

I found a thread by ‘ascii-’on the old TrusNAS forum about trying to wire up the power connector for the 8x SAS backplane PN 747592-002 from the HPE HP DL380 Gen9 server. (Can’t provide the link due to forum rules)

I’ve picked up PN 832305-002 from a Gen10 server, which looks pretty much identical. I’m trying to work out how to wire it up. I don’t have an HPE mainboard, I’m trying to get this backplane to work in a PC with a Broadcomm 9500-8i controller card.

This is where I would normally include a photo, but forum rules don’t allow. The power connector has six pins oriented 2 wide 3 high with the retention tab on the left, ascii- numbered the pins like this

1 4
Tab 2 5
3 6

ascii- tried wiring up the power connector (red box/numbers) up as follows, but couldn’t get the disks to spin up.

P1 +3.3V
P2 Ground
P3 +12V
P4 +12V
P5 Ground
P6 empty

My backplane came with a Foxconn cable with no connection on pin 6.

Based on an initial probing, I agree with the designations of P2-P6.

P1 however, I am not sure about. It seems to be connected to both non-inverting inputs of the LM358A on the bottom right of the backplane. I haven’t worked out further but it might have something to do with the interface with the smart carriers.

So does anybody know what P1 does? I’m hoping it might be something like 5V to power on the drives and not an I2C communications line? I’m hoping there is some way of getting the backplane to work without a comms interface?

By the way, the IC to the elft of the power connector appears to be a 12V→5V DC-DC convertor; there is no 3.3V power to the SAS connectors.
