Building a replacement setup for my existing (aging) TrueNAS setup. Here are the specs:
Supermicro X11SSA-F-O running latest BIOS
Core i3-6100
64 GB 2400 DDR ECC RAM (4x16)
Dell H310 in IT Mode
Supermicro BPN-SAS2-826EL1
12x 6TB SAS drives
TrueNAS Scale 25.04.1
TrueNAS sees my HBA card (I have 2 and tested both) but not the backplane. I’ve tried a second backplane of the same model, new SFF cable(s), with no avail. No drives are ever detected. I can connect the SAS drives via breakout cables to the HBA and see them in the OS.
Are there any known issues with this (or other SM) board recognizing the backplane? Any settings in the BIOS that need to be adjusted for it to be recognized? Apppreciate any input or ideas!
There is a newish, and annoying, feature for SAS & SATA called Power Disable. See this diagram:
If your backplane does not use the Power Disable function, BUT, it does supply 3.3v power, the drives may be in disable mode.
Check the power to the backplane and the backplane disk power connectors. You don’t list the make & model of the SAS drives, so you should check the manufacturer’s user guide to see if they support the Power Disable function.
Standard workaround is to put electrical tape on that pin, drive side.
As to why you can use a a breakout cable to the HBA, is that the power cable you are using would not be connecting pin 3 to 3.3v.
To be clear, I don’t know this is your problem. Just one thing to check.
Thanks - will check into the power disable on the drives. I have a mix of HGST Ultrastar and Seagate drives. For Seagate, I tried some ST2000 2TB and ST6000 6TB drives with no luck. HGST are a mix of 7K6000 and HUS726060AL5214 drives (all 6TB).
