This is about hating NUT, (Network UPS Tools), and not nuts in general. (I like walnuts, almonds, peanut butter, etc… I am NOT against nuts.)
Recently I decided to re-instate my desktop’s UPS auto-shutdown. I kind of ran out of USB ports on my miniature desktop. A few weeks ago I unplugged my UPS’s USB connection because I needed the USB port for my Blu-ray/DVD drive to transcode a recently bought TV series.
Well, since this Cyberpower UPS has a SNMP card in it, it was time to actually use it. The stupid NUT software kept insisting I “made a mistake”, but the manual pages don’t actually tell you what the mistake could be. Or how to fix it.
The Internet, (usually helpful), was completely useless. You would figure that with a name like “Network UPS Tools” their would be reasonable documentation on how to configure the network “snmp-ups” driver. But NOOO, let me show you how to configure with a USB port. And if you are lucky, a serial port.
Eventually I found the missing link by actually reading the startup scripts, (this miniature desktop uses Gentoo Linux without the malware SystemD). Of course I am withholding the fix, because if I can get paid for my lost time, I will.
There goes 2 hours of my life I will never get back.
I don’t know that I’d endorse hating it with a passion, but it is remarkable that something as widely-used (and mission-critical) as nut is as poorly documented and maintained as it is.
I know you are no stranger to losing hours of valuable time chasing something that should be easy. I’d say that we all have been there and probably more often than we realize.
When is it not xkcd time? As to that particular one, many such cases, another one being NTP as I understand it (and IIRC, our dearly-departed grinch[1] had something to do with that one).
Edit: I should clarify that. AFAIK, JGreco is alive. “Departed” means only that he’s no longer with us on the forum. ↩︎
I flagged your post. It’s one thing to struggle with software and tech, but it’s unacceptable to blatantly lie.
Walnuts and almonds are not actually nuts. They are drupes. Peanuts are legumes. You could have at least used a true nut in your post, such as the coconut.
Simple: For every moment in life, there is an appropriate xkcd.
Therefore there must be an xkcd about when it is NOT xkcd time…
Pick your own solution to this variant of Russell’s paradox.[1] As in mathematics, several solutions should be possible—none of which is fully satisfactory.
Let R be the set of sets which are not members of themselves. Does R belong in R? ↩︎
I hope Joe is still with us. I still recall when I made edited his Grinch icon with bigger red eyes. Those were the days when a moderator could do a lot more on the old forums. Good times.
There are several well known open source tools that have clumsy configuration or usage. I am looking at you, GIMP!
On the other hand, while LibreOffice is complex, it is reasonable to use. (At least from my limited perspective…) Perhaps it is because it used to be a commercial product, StarOffice. Sun should have just kept the name, instead of re-branding it OpenOffice. Or for that matter, perhaps calling the software SunOffice.
To be clear, the name change from OpenOffice to LibreOffice was due to Oracle buying Sun. People wanted a fork of OpenOffice that Oracle could do nothing to, except normal bug reports and pull requests. (Which of course, Oracle would never do…)
