Internet connection issues with TrueNas scale

Hello everyone,

I’ve been experiencing persistent network issues with my TrueNAS Scale VM running on Proxmox. Initially, several weeks after installation, TrueNAS lost access to the internet outside my local network. I could still ping other devices on the same network, but external addresses like 8.8.8.8 were unreachable. Restarting the VM temporarily fixed this issue. (after while (several days) somehow server cant reach internet)

However, a new problem emerged: TrueNAS would boot without the web UI or any apps, seemingly with no networking functionality at all. After a few reboots, it would work fine for about 10 minutes but then fail to connect to the DHCP server and become unreachable.

Another recurring issue is that everything appears functional except for the router’s ability to forward packets externally. I can access the internet from TrueNAS (e.g., ping google.com works), but I can’t forward the web UI externally. Restarting temporarily resolves this.

These problems have been occurring intermittently over the past few months. In an attempt to troubleshoot, I:

  • Disabled the firewall, as the system wouldn’t work at all with it enabled (in bridge settings).
  • Tried creating a separate bridge for TrueNAS, but it didn’t help.

I’m new to Proxmox, and these networking issues are making things quite frustrating. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Server Specifications:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5-14500
  • Motherboard: ASROCK B660M Pro RS
  • RAM: 2x G.SKILL 32GB KIT DDR4 3200MHz CL16 Gaming Series Aegis
  • SSD: 2x Patriot VIPER VP4300 Lite 2TB
  • HDD: 3x 12TB Seagate IronWolf

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Proxmox has to be set up very specifically for TrueNAS to be a VM on it. Just going by your Server Spec, I am guessing it is not.

Usual advice is passing through an entire HBA controller with all disks attached and blacklisting it in Proxmox. You risk loosing all your data.

Thanks a lot for an answer. I unfortunately had no idea how to set up the SSD because on one hand they have to be used for hosting the proxmox and also as boot drive for TrueNAS scale. so i went with RAID1. I have passed through the HDDs in to TrueNAS scale and there build them.

i don’t really follow you what to do, because nowhere in the article I found what to do with my Network Card (how to pass through it or what else to do). Sorry, i don’t understand it much. Thanks for your time.

The link was for how you needed to set up TrueNAS as a VM and not lose your data and pools. It didn’t really have anything to do with the networking.

I think you need to describe how you have Proxmox set up with the networking and how you have the TrueNAS VM set up for networking. Is the TrueNAS VM just using default settings and DHCP to get an ip address?
