Is it bad practice to sync instead of replicate snapshots?

I have 2 TrueNAS servers, one at home and another at the office.
I want their files to be synced, so I can have full speed access to them no matter I am at home or office.

But then this is not really a backup, but to backup one of them would take at least 33% more storage.

So if I just have snapshots setup on both of them to backup locally, and just sync both servers including their own local backup, would this be a good method?

Thanks!

Replication is good for read-only backups.
What you want is more in the realm of Syncthings.

Thank you!

Would you think Syncthings + setting up local snapshots on both servers be a sufficient backup strategies?

Are there anything else I should do or more risks I should look out for?

A copy on a separate machine is a backup, even if it’s not a replication.

Just be sure you prevent (or can recover from) your backup being erased by “synchronizing” with an accidentally erased primary.

The snapshots should help with that.

Oh that’s a really good point, thank you very much!
