I’m a novice user of scale. I do use the shell every now and again but largely I struggle with any kind of CLI. I was wondering if there was an app to simplify viewing truenas logs? I’ve tried to find one but no luck so I thought I’d ask here
I’ve heard of some kind of log parser app that makes reading certain logs easier, can dig around if needed. But what logs are you interested in? App logs or system logs or what?
Ah, the hard stuff then. I was gonna recommend Dozzle, it’s awesome for looking at docker logs and is essentially a zero-config app.
First thing to troubleshoot if your NAS is just dying quietly is turning off services. Just recently we think we helped a dude whose video card was sharing ram with the system and dying when RAM was getting hammered for Plex maintenance tasks.
Day one, turn all the apps off, see what happens. Day two, power up some lightweights. Day three, you get the picture. Top it off with a pool scrub and see if it can survive that. I’m assuming new box/new build with questionable hardware.
Have you noticed any kind of trend yet? Is this a new build?
If the scope of your inquiry is potentially a bit larger, syslog servers exist for exactly this purpose. I personally like and have used this both personally and profressionaly.
Its a relatively recent rebuilt with some new and old hardware. Sounds so silly when I say it now but I wanted to put my set up in a nice looming case and move from mirror to RAID so I did a rebuild.
In terms of acessing logs. Can you recommend a good way to learn? I have zero clue which logs id need to look at for powering off let alone how to find them
Also, that guy with the plex server… hell of a problem. Amazing you were able to diagnose
