Issues setting up NFS share in Truenas/Windows

Hello all,

Not an IT Guru and asking for some help here. I have truenas core setup with 2 pools on my network shared through SMB on my windows 10 pc. I’ve heard that using NFS share is faster than SMB and I’d like to switch over to using NFS.

I am able to share the datasets in my pool individually but I’d like to share the entire pool to avoid having a bunch of icons in my file explorer. I cannot seem to get this to work regardless what i set my regedit UID/GID to in windows. It detects the ‘media’ folder but its readonly. I have ‘All Dirs’ checked in turenas as well.

Thanks

Nevermind. Documentation says not to share root level folder

That’s probably the wrong approach to take. Whether a particular protocol is faster is usually answered by “it depends”. If you’re using Windows, the correct choice is almost always to use SMB. If you’re having performance problems, then it’s usually better to investigate those in detail rather than trying to swap out protocols.

Ive been testing hardware with no difference in performance (different drives, more ram, network setup) just switching gears to see if ‘software’ can improve.

It may be that SMB is faster on windows but i’d like to find out for myself.

Right, but do note that when you switch protocols you lose features such as authentication and such (and many other features that IT people are familiar with, but maybe not home users). There’s generally a reason why people go down particular paths for services.

Yup, just discovered that. Luckily I’m the only one on this network.
