So 1000€ for case/motherboard/RAM/PSU? Compact system?
Supermicro X10SDV-4C-TLN2F:

Just a heads up for everyone looking into building a small, low power NAS.
There are a good amount of X10SDV-4C-TLN2F available on ebay right now out of China for around 250 USD.
4C/ 8T Xeon D-1521
10 G Ethernet
6x SATA
1x m.2
DDR4 RDIMM ECC
ASPEED BMC/IPMI
PCIe 3.0x 16 (4x4x4x4 possible)
Just picked one up
Has a m.2 slot for a boot device, dual Intel 10 GbE, IPMI (with HTML5 IP-KVM), up to 128 GB RAM. Six SATA ports onboard, and a PCIe 3.0 x16 slot for a HBA if you need more.
About US$250. A 32GB RDIMM, US$60. The 45HomeLab HL8:

Pricey, but 8 bays in the most compact chassis I’ve seen. For some less-pricey (and less-compact) options, see other comments in this thread:

I became aware of the 45Drives HL8 server, currently in presale status:

Looks pretty attractive for an eight-bay unit, particularly knowing that they’ll have 2.5" bays available as well. Compares pretty favorably in price to the UGREEN 8-bay unit, IMO, presuming the latter’s MSRP is its actual street price. Advantages I see compared to UGREEN:
$100 cheaper
