Many thanks for any guidance or thoughts the community may be able to offer!
I’m very new to TrueNAS and large storage servers, though I’ve played around with IT for a good number of years.
I have outgrown my Synology DS 1819+ and expansion unit - and rather than getting a second expansion unit, I opted to go down the road of a Supermicro CSE-847 case, planning to fit it out with a mainboard, CPU and ram I have on hand.
I managed to source a CSE-847 and a pair of the PWS-1K28P-SQ (quiet mode) power supplies - and thought I was on a winner.
I’ve plugged in my mainboard (it’s actually a full ATX mainboard from an old gaming rig), and found out through some trial and testing that the power being supplied by the Supermicro power supplies doesn’t quite agree with my non-server mainboard. I’m pretty sure in this case it’s power related - the same board fires up with no issue when I plug in a spare ATX power supply.
I don’t know if this is particular to the board I am using, or if it’s an issue with non-server boards in what is essentially a server case - some research points me to needsing a server board, and likely a Supermicro board.
First question - am I on the right track by thinking I need a server board for this chassis?
Second question - whick server board and CPU should I aim for please? I’m looking to run TrueNAS Scale, and potentially a couple of VM’s - but nothing intensely heavy. Main use will be for Plex, transcoding/upscaling is currently being done by an nVidia Shield and/or HTPC - the Synology I have now certainly isn’t doing any transcoding, and my media is in an acceptable format and resolution for “direct playback”
Third question - I’m based in Australia, and our second hand market is woeful (I bought the case in from the USA, shipping was… interesting). I’m open to trusted businesses (prefer no ebay please, been burned too many times) based in UK/USA/Other - so if folks know of a place that can help a keen hobbist out, and are happy to point me in the right direction, that would be hugely appreciated!
Many thanks to anyone who is able to assist, and look forward to much fun on the journey! ![]()
