I was like that, too; but really out of necessity cause I was broke and couldnât afford another machine. Hell, even the gaming machine was really more an entry-level machine with budget GPU.
Now I am not poor, but even that is irrelevant cause Iâm old enough to have multiple computers around the house from past upgrades that I donât even know what to do with, so there is no longer any reason to just run everything on one machine.
I did not even bang my teeth back in the days. I recall RAID and server setups I did for smb that give me a cold shiver. Miraculously, I never had mayor downtime or any data loss back then.
Yeah, maybe it is also because of the increased complexity or my being too lazy to fix something.
How I upgrade OPNsense nowadays is almost comical.
It is bare metal.
I download an XML (despite me doing google drive xml backups) and take a ZFS snapshot. And for what? For the rare occasion that something goes wrong on a OPNsense update? How many times did that happen over the last decade? Exactly 0 times!
But I swear to god, the day I stop doing it this way, I will crash my system and google will lockdown my account at the same time ![]()
None of my close IT peers even have an NAS. Occasionally, they have a copy of the photo-library on an external SSD.
I do believe that the main reason is that they (and I) are young enough to not encounter (critical) data loss even once.
And the other reason being that CS in high school has no topics on data management/backups. At least mine didnât have those. Everyone knows that you can skip washing your hands before a meal on some occasions. But you shouldnât skip it on a regular basis. And yet, the majority donât even think that they are skipping backup, and it shouldnât be this way. I mean, itâs okay to break the ârulesâ as long as you aware of the consequences. But backup rules are not even studied.
Convenience trumps other considerations often. Until something breaks. I consider the data I back up too valuable to trust to any service whose performance is close to but not absolutely perfect. Never mind the latency associated with online backups and the recovery thereof.
ZFS, along with an off site backup strategy, is a better option for the time being.
