Motherboard, 2025 hardware guide?

Hello,

What is a recommended motherboard for 2025? I did not come across any hardware guide on this forum.

Cheers

The TrueNAS Documentation, Hardware Guide section for basic requirements

The Resources section may help. Not much has changed. Giving your requirements may help narrow down suggestions. MB form factor, required slots, etc
Resources List including Detailed Hardware and System Build Notes (plus new user advice / help)

The short answer is probably that no 2025 motherboard is recommended.
PCIe 5.0 make for expensive motherboards but is of no use for a NAS. Older hardware will be best value.

Thank you for sharing. I used an earlier version of this guide to build a system in 2014 which has been running non-stop with no issues. It is a SuperMicroX10SLL-F-O with Intel Xeon E3-1230V3 Haswell 3.3GHz and Crucial (2 x 8GB) ECC DDR3 1600 and still meets my needs but due to its age I thought it was time to update and I need to get off USB boot. :grimacing:

I’m now looking to build a new system around 4x12TB WD Red™ Plus drives which I found on sale and just got delivered today. I’ll re-read the guide. I am looking to determine which Supermicro MB, processor and RAM is the best bang for the buck in the US for a small home use system that is mainly for Plex and some other low demand applications. I am more than thrilled with my past experience.

It’s not the latest generation, but the Supermicro X10SDV-4C-TLN2F can be had on eBay for around US$250 shipped from China, including a Xeon-D CPU. See:
https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/motherboard/X10SDV-4C-TLN2F
and

Dual 10 GbE, m.2 slot, up to 128 GB ECC RDIMMs. Only one PCIe slot, so expansion is limited, but with only four spinners anyway it sounds like a pretty good option. I bought one after I saw that thread, and I don’t even know what I’d use it for yet.

I was thinking, off site backup.

So 32GB ECC, a case, power supply, some fans and 2 boot drives and I’m good to go with my four Red Plus? If so, that’s tempting.

One would do. Just keep a backup of your config file.

Absolutely true but I don’t like surprises with my Nas and ssd are so cheap now they sell them in pairs. My boot is a pair of 256gb ssd’s mirrored. If one dies I shrug and get another one.

This was after years of mirrored thumb drives that bit the dust every few months so you can see how I came to this solution. Did things the wrong way, got paranoid, now it’s overkill.
