Nobody wrote that… The issue with Realtek NICs is their driver tend to collapse under heavy load with multiple clients); the result is dismal performance, but normally not data corruption.
ECC is a different thing.

What should worry you, and which has not been pointed out, is that Proxomox knows ZFS and aggressivly tries to mount pools, which results in pool corruption .
To virtualise TrueNAS you need to passthrough the drive controler—typically a HBA… but you may do with passing the onboard SATA controller if it is properly isolated in its own PCIe group.
To virtualise TrueNAS on Proxmox, you must further blacklist the drive controller to prevent any access by Proxmox.

Starting up uses much more than 8W per drive.

A 450 W PSU is just enough for estimated peak power… if it keeps to its rating and has enough power on the “good” rail. So bump that to 550 W to be on the safe side… unless you want to risk your whole setup by scraping little change from a cheaper PSU :wink:

Thanks, yes this is well understood and I don’t virtualize anything. Just wanted to have a single NAS for smb filesharing, that’s it.

Anyway, I dropped down the idea. You’ve scared me on the stability and reliability of TRUENAS :sweat_smile:

I have been running truenas for 10 years using server grade components. 24/7 apart from occasional reboots due to software updates or hardware upgrades. Not a single failure.

I just followed the recommendations of this great community. The only components that failed were consumer SSDs and desktop grade hard drives.

If you feel a qnap is better for you then be it. Otherwise get a server grade board like the c246 suggested by @etorix, pair it with a 9100 and ecc RAM and you will be fine.

HBA is recommended when you need extra SATA ports (an alternative is a PCIe sata expander which will corrupt your data).

Intel ethernet is recommended because it contributes to the overall positive experience.

A reasonably sized quality PSU is recommended so your hardware does not crap out when booting up.

I am just outlining the facts but you decide what is better for you.

This is DIY at the end of the day and you need to understand why you are doing things. Or just pay qnap to make the decisions for you :slight_smile:

That’s fine. Advice can go either way… but I suggest you sit down, cool down and read the thread again because nothing here seems that dramatic to me.

If you do change your mind and go ahead after all, the best set up for bare metal TrueNAS is a motherboard with enough SATA ports and no HBA.
Server-grade components (including server-grade NIC) and ECC RAM are nice extras if you aim for reliability.
So if you have the opportunity to change this consumer B550 for a X570 (8 SATA ports) or an Intel motherboard with 8 SATA, go for it.

I was planning to use my ddr4 ECC sodimm with mechanical adapter for standard dimm.

I imagine following the same path that such adapter are not suggested to be used yes ?

It’s one more thing that can cause you issues. Given how risk averse you appear to be, I am surprised you would go for such a solution.

I’m going to stick to my recommendation to you, get a QNAP.

Shipment from china via ebay has so far for me and quite a few others been the way to go.

I already have a QNAP and threir SW is full of bugs…even ok hbs3 backup app…and smb async io …. That’s why I discarded initially…

Until 2 years ago i thought the same, but i was wrong… it was me who didn’t know how to search :smile: I build 2 systems happily sticking on Skylake (see signature), spending really nothing… also i have another one platform that is actually unused, but was cheap and i couldn’t resist to buy it :nerd_face: .
Someone might say that those parts are more workstation oriented than server grade… but honestly i don’t miss anything (neither the IPMI, but this can be really subjective).
my 2 cents: try a search of an “older” workstation, and see if you find something interesting

I cannot believe that there are no resellers in Italy dealing with server-grade hardware.
But even if it were, there are sellers in Germany or Austria who could ship internationally, as does Anafra (supermicro.eu) from the Czech Republic…

I certainly did not expect THAT curveball… and would not trust that an adapter properly carries ECC signals. Get either a motherboard which takes SO-DIMM or regular ECC DIMM.

mj11-ec1 off the top of my head. Add 64 GB of RDIMM and you are set. 8 sata drives + 1 m.2 nvme for boot. 120 euros for the board but the price keeps going up and down. I have that board and plan to use it for a backup nas.

ASRock Rack B450D4U + ECC udimm + ryzen pro + HBA. 30 euros for the board.

asrock e3c252d4u-2t for 121 euros. uses ECC udimm + xeon e-2300. I use that board for my home server.

these are all from EU

Ebay.de gave me an offer for this bundle: https://www.ebay.de/itm/277994496244 (board + cpu for 265). Ram bundled with it is probably non ECC but the board and cpu support ECC. Use an HBA with it but it is over priced IMHO.

The embedded you suggested is nice, but I would stick with micro atx FF for some exapandability option.

The asrock motherboard even if shipped from china is nice: 10gb lan and a lot of ports.

right now I’ve selected these 3 components:

Total cost:328 euro. In the future I’ll add other 32gb of ram…or is better to do it now because in this case different type of ram can make the server explode ? :smiley:
