What are your drives connected to?
Harddrives are directly connected to the motherboard via SATA cables
You may need to dive deeper, which I’m not comfortable with.
So you’re not without some understanding of what you tried:
- We confirmed that the OS detects the disks and their partitions
- Two 12-TB disks, each with a swap partition and a ZFS partition
zpool import
claims there are no available pools to importzpool import -d /dev/disk/by-partuuid
cannot even detect the ZFS metadata on the supposed partitions, even when instructed to explicitly look for them with known PARTUUIDs.
Since you’re not using an HBA or “RAID” card, it also rules those out.
Someone might come in here with zdb
commands, which are too low level for my comfort.

It is concerning.
Unless the reboot was caused by faulty power or an electrical issue, and somehow managed to damage both HDDs, but not enough to make them undetecable or ruin their partition tables.
Doesn’t hurt to run a short (and if you’re willing, a long) SMART selftest on both drives.
While you’re at it, to check some SMART info before running any tests:
smartctl -l selftest /dev/sda
smartctl -l error /dev/sda
smartctl -x /dev/sda
Repeat for sdb
as well.

With the zdb
tool, and someone who is more savvy, they might be able to help figure this out.
My only other “quick” test is to boot into an Ubuntu 24.10 live ISO from a USB stick, and see if the command zpool import -d /dev/disk/by-partuuid
detects an available pool to import.
This can maybe rule out TrueNAS.
EDIT: Don’t actually import or mount anything. You’re only testing to see if it can detect an importable pool from a clean Ubuntu 24.10 environment.
with respect to your expertise, i’ve tried the zpool imports thru ubuntu prior to coming to the forums and it returned “no pool available” as well

Forgot to ask. There is no Proxmox or hypervisor or VM involved? Pure bare metal PC with TrueNAS installed directly on it?

reading upon some of the deeper zdb commands - i should be doing a backup of the disks? in their unreadable state?
do i need to back up both? or only 1 of them since they’re mirrored? I have an uninitialized external harddrive thats 14TB - not sure if i can back up both sda and sdb if they’re 12TB (10.9T)

I tested these commands on my own SCALE system before recommending them. I have no idea why it doesn’t work on your SCALE system.
Actually yes, it is very useful. The START sector of the partition is not essential. This shows that the disks for the missing pool are visible to Linux, and that the ZFS partitions exist and have partuuids.
However ZFS is unable to find and import the disks for some reason. Please run:
sudo zpool import -d /dev/disk/by-partuuid
and post the results here.

I would assume that the data is on the disk somewhere just inaccessible
Be optimistic - I could probably make a guess at the command you need to try, but rather than hoping I get it right you would probably be better off waiting to see if Chris can help with less guesswork and more expertise.
