New NAS based on AOOSTAR WTR PRO 5825U + Truenas family edition

Hi (all?),

I am planning a new Truenas NAS based on above basic components.

  • memory (I own 2x16 GB DDR4 3200 SODIMM) not to worry
  • How do I install the following on this platform?

OS: Truenas family edition (previously known as Scale I think) on 2 small M.2 NVMEs in Mirror mode (like a RAID 1 configuration)

Data NAS storage: I own two WD Red plus 4TB NAS drives and want to install those two in a RAID 1 configuration. Two of the 3.5” bays will remain empty for now (to be used later).

Can anyone help me with installation instructions?

(and yes I chose two NVMEs in mirror mode for the Truenas OS because I need great redundancy)

Thanks!

Hans

Its Community Edition (CE) :winking_face_with_tongue:

Mirrored bootpool is not gonna be redundant in the way you think. Because SSDs often dont fail completely and you will have to spend time anyway in resolving the problem.

Save your config file regularly. That way replacing the drive, reinstalling truenas and restoring the config takes maybe 15 minutes.

“Raid 1” is simply called Mirror in ZFS/Truenas.

Once Truenas is installed, you can create a pool that way using the GUI.

Use the 2nd NVMe as a seperate Pool for Apps.

Hi Farout, thanks for the advice!

Newby question concerning the first line (copy) in this reply.

Is that an easy task? Or in other words how do I do that?

TNX,

Hans

You can download / upload it under System → Advanced Settings → Manage Configuration.
Truenas will also offer to download it when you update.

There is also the Multi Report Script that will send you the file via email.
