New problem since update - SMB shares do not show up

i have two truenas servers, hardware is similar, options are pretty much the same. one is a few years older, so has many more updates. they are both currently on 24.10.2 although they both started on freenas and i updated along the way. this problem came up after i shifted to scale

one server is fine, the other shows the netbios name in a windows browser BUT wont show any of the smb shares. if you browse using the ip address vs the netbios name, it works fine.

netbios name is set and matches the hostname, and ws-discovery is enabled, else i wouldnt see the netbios name (even though it doesnt do much except show itself)

i thought it might be a permission issue, but it works using the ip address, so…
and i installed another independent dataset with smb shares, and those dont show up either.

im at a loss. any ideas?

Hi Mark, what OS are the SMB clients running?

windows 11

see here

tried that, and it worked!

so now i am seriously questioning my understanding of how this stuff works.

the other server does not have that checked, and it works fine.
this one worked before, but after an update stopped.
now it works
and now i turned it back off, and it still works.

so i give up, will just turn it on and leave it on so it continues to work

thanks for the help

It would appear that even just toggling one of those settings fixes the issue, potential bug @Captain_Morgan ?

If we can create a repeatable problem and work with engineering, then a bug report would be useful.

It sounds like the announcments are not frequent enough and that the toggle sends one immediately???

the part i dont understand; i have two boxes, and connect using the same desktop computer, so if there was a issue i would think it would be consistent between the servers.

if it stops again, ill try turning it on again (its currently off) and then at that point it would be considered ‘repeatable’ and i can report it.
