Hi all,
Noob needing advice.
I’m building my first home server from repurposed parts as I have an extreme hatred of waste.
I have an old Cooler Master ATX case and I’ll be installing an Asus P8z77-V LX motherboard with a Core i7 4770 cpu and 32G of ram.
I’ll also be using an SDD as a boot drive when I get one and already have 6x Dell SAS 1T Constellation ES hard drives.
My question is in relation to the SAS drives and what would be an appropriate controller card to use.
I found Dell HV52W PowerEdge Controller H310 on eBay and am wondering if it will do the job.
Thanks in advance

Lots of ppl here use refurbished (server) hardware. I think its a excellent idea, however i also think that 13 year old hardware is a) not very power efficient and b) probably at the end of its lifetime.
6x 1 TB SAS drives doesnt make much sense nowadays. With RAIDZ2 thats 4 TB usable space.

You may need to flash it to IT mode from raid.
Don’t overdo the boot SSD. what are you getting?
Is the system only to be a NAS? Is it going to always be on?
Thanks for responding.
It’s what I have available, and this is my first time in the server world of computing.
I’ll upgrade as needed and will still be relying on people in this forum for advise.
Thanks
Ok. Don’t know what IT mode is yet, but I will look it up.
Hi Floz, thanks for responding.
I was only thinking about a small SSD maybe 32GB. Again, depends on what’s available.
Yes, It will be purely a NAS on 24/7 serving music and video files through the house. And some gaming ROMS for an emulator.

Just always have a full backup ready, and you can experiment with what you have. Dont use it as your only copy of your data.

Good advice.
My intention was only to copy all my data to the server, run it a couple of months, and upgrade the drives once I had some idea of what I was doing.
