I just watched a Mikrotik video about NVME over Ethernet and was wondering if there is any talk about building this into Truenas? Seems to be very similar to iSCSI and I’m not sure about client support yet, so might be a bit early to discuss this topic.
I haven’t seen any discussion in XCP-NG yet, don’t see any options in ESXi or vSphere, so maybe not a thing yet. But thought this was worth asking.
TrueNAS uses NVMe o Ethernet in its F-Series products to expand flash pools to over 4PB.
The NVMoE data path is well-defined.
However, the management and control plane is quite complex and custom and uses out-of-band protocols. Its not good for interoperability so we only use it internally.
NVMeoTCP shows better signs for interopeable support. … more like iSCSI. We are looking at that.
