OpenVPN is gone in scale, what are the options?

I have tried for days on my ASUS 88X router to use its built in OpenVPN but with no success. Does anyone have recommendations on what to use for VPN? I also tried Tailscale in the scale apps, but it has all sorts of permission issues (I made another post about it).

The only other VPN app in scale is wireguard. It looks pretty convoluted.

Surprised you are having issue with Tailscale, generally it “just works”. But another alternative is ZeroTier in the Apps catalog. Similar functionality.

Out of curiosity, I tried zerotier, and it worked surprisingly well for my needs. It allowed me to connect truenas to a virtual network, and my phone and other computers outside of my home network can also join that virtual network, and can be visited via designated ip addresses defined by zerotier. I guess tailscale works the same way, but the settings in tailscale is so convoluted, and the app in dragonfish default does not install at all, forever stuck at deploying.

Dragonfish? What is that? You should be on ElectricEel 24.10.1

That’s wild that you think Wireguard is somehow more convoluted than OpenVPN. Wireguard is almost as simple as SSH. OpenVPN is like 10x more convoluted than Wireguard. Admittedly, it also has way more functionality that Wireguard does not support (eg. DHCP, NAT, TCP).

I think it is really due to the terminology used in the WG config. But there are many tutorials out there that simplifies the understanding of it.

Put I do agree WG is much easier to use. However I prefer to use Tailscale.
