I’ve been running FreeNAS/TrueNAS for about 5–6 years on the same custom PC (i3 8th gen with 8 GB RAM). I only use it for PLEX, and over the years I’ve accumulated around 20 TB of films and TV series across 5 HDDs.
I’m now running into issues installing PLEX (the 13.2 release error), and many people have suggested moving from TrueNAS CORE to TrueNAS SCALE.
If I do that, will I have to wipe all of my HDDs? Is there any way to migrate without losing my data?
Also, is there any other solution that would let me stay on CORE and avoid moving to SCALE entirely?
Your data is fine. The update process doesn’t touch the data disks.
If you’re scared you can physically disconnect the drives, update and reconnect the disks.
You could also save a copy of your config, get a new ssd to install scale on, replace your core boot drive and import your config on the new scale install.
The easiest path to upgrade would be to upgrade to the latest version of Core, save a copy of your config, do a fresh install of Scale and then upload your saved config.
You should consider adding another 8GB of RAM to your system for reliability reasons. 8GB is ok for a simple file server but if you want to run apps you’re going to need more memory.
OK, I actually do have 16GB. when I built the system (5 years ago) everyone was saying that 16GB was such an overkill for the system, im now happy I went with that
At the moment I have Version: TrueNAS-13.0-U6.7
I noticed you can download the normal ISO file or the update file for the SCALE, which one should go for ? am I better updating through the UI ?
Save a copy of your config and download the full install iso for a fresh installation. Once the install is complete upload your saved config and reboot.
