Plex not available outside the local network

Hello all,

I have been working on this for weeks. I did a fresh install to ElectricEel-24.10.2. Installed all my programs from Truenas docker repository and everything works perfectly locally. Plex on the other hand is not accessible from outside the network. I do not have any ad blockers or Advance security turned on and I do have the port 32400 forward on my Eeros 6e router. I have even call Eeros support and they confirmed it is set up correctly. I talked with my ISP Blue Peak, and they have set me up with a commercial internet with a static IP (something I didn’t think I would need for Plex). and hasn’t help me solve the Plex issue. I am not and IT guy, just a computer junky. I feel I may have missed something. My question is should I set the static IP on the Truenas Server (heard not Recommended) and set it up before my router or do I set it up on the Router itself. I have played around with both and have no luck getting plex outside my network. I don’t think Plex needs a static IP in the first place just an open port. My internet is a fiber internet. The line goes to the fiber box then to Eero Router to my Truenas Server though an 18-port switch.
Can anyone help me solve this issue?

I ave two questions? Did you make sure your server running Plex is not on a double NAT situation (I.E router 1 > router 2 > plex server). And also can you check inside the Plex GUI and confirm in the Settings > Remote Access > Manually specify public port that the check box is selected and the value in the box is the port value 32400 or whatever value you have set for your external router for talking to plex server. Also you shouldn’t need a static ip-address. You just need your router configured so that it keeps the ip for your plex server reserved, so that the ip-address is not issued to another device from DHCP.

Raikyu,

Thank you for your reply. Interesting development from my last Post. I live in Wyoming and my daughter who lives in Idaho is telling me she can access Plex. However, the GUI tells me it’s not available outside the network. I also have used a port checker and Port 32400 is not showing its open.

Is it possible, it is a Docker issue? or a bug in Plex 1.41.3.9314

But to answer your questions I only one router on my network. I have checked and Plex is manually configured to port 32400 internal and external. The Truenas IP is reserved so thank you for confirming a static IP from the ISP is not needed.

Can you provide any screenshots?

Most likely you have not properly setup port forwarding at your router. Maybe your daughter only thinks she is accessing your server but in reality she’s just using the Plex provided Movies & Shows, or if you provided a VPN connection to your home network for her then she would be able to connect as if she was local (but I assume you did not do this), so likely the former.

But a few other things you might want to look into verifying:

  1. Does your docker contain the following?

  2. In this image my public port is 32401 (what I set in my router), but yours will be 32400.

  3. And just for sanity did you try enable remote access by clocking the button Enable Remote Access after entering the port information?
