I had a made a pool of 20tb*4hdd with 2 hdd in raid the pool name was vault 2 and in that i had made a separate share for my books which had only read permission
Last week i added 5 more hardrive of 20tb to same pool but for some reason available space has increased on my books folder
I dont know how to solve it books is the part of vault only then why does it shows as different space i am also attaching images please help
Just search for RAID-Zx-expansion tag and read about space reporting in GUI vs CLI. Use the CLI for most accurate info.
I am new to this can you please explain how to troubleshoot
I tried searching for the problem but there is no proper solution to this
I hope I understand what you were talking about. Space reporting the in the GUI is incorrect after expanding your Data pool VDEV from a Raid-Z2 of 4 drives to 9 drives?
zfs list -o space Data typed in the Shell CLI should give you more accurate data on space. It won’t give you the expected results if you had created a 9 wide VDEV of Raid-Z2 to begin with and then put your data on the drive.
Your screenshots are from a phone so they are a bit hard to read, compared to the entire screen on a desktop computer. Have you tried rebooting the NAS and SMB client computer? Do you have any quotas set on those SMB shares?
ok i will explain everything in detail
i created a raid z2 pool by adding 4 drives of 20tb and i named it vault and i made a shared folder by name of books in it which had only read permissions so no one can delete anything from it
this week i added 5 drives of 20tb and expanded my pool so i can get more storage after adding all the drives 1 by 1 i found that for some reason the added tb are showing in books drive
now i am confused in ui its showing 54 tb as usable and i command line its showing 120+tb of available space
so is it a bug or i am missing out on something
i am attaching photos of command line as well as photo from ui and also a photo of my pc in which ihave mounted vault and book
now when i mount in window though books and vault are from same dataset they both show different properties
your help will be very much appreciated
I’m not sure why you get two different answers on space in Windows Explorer. Space in the Windows Explorer has never been what others expect, compared to how it is reported on a share severed by a Windows machine.
The GUI will report the space free from before you did the expansion
zpool list will give you the most accurate listing of the space after Raid-Z expansion but space reporting is a bit weird under ZFS. The system uses the default pool record size so if you have pools with a non default record size, the reporting is a bit off.
On top of that, if your system used Block Cloning in copying data within the system, it can through the space reporting off even more.
So will i get 164tb usable?
And is there any way i can correct the reporting in gui as well
Because if you look in the image it shows 164tb size allocated 55.3tb and 108t free
Unfortunately, the only way to get the GUI to report ‘correctly’ would be to back up all your data, destroy the pool, create the 9 wide Raid-Z2 and put everything back.
I tried looking for a good explanation of it all but a lot is just spread out in those RAID-Zx-expansion threads.
No problem if it does not get updated in ui
But will i get to use the whole 126tb ?
So it is like the ui gets confused about available storage
Command line shows perfect storage so in my case windows will show my pool as 54 and after i reach 54 tb it will show 0gb available but still i will be able to store files till 120tb
There’s some links in the documentation but you have to expand the Overview and Considerations section
