Recommendation for extra 2-Port Nic

Hi Experts,

Newbie here.

Config:
Router is at 10.10.9.1/24
Proxmox server at 10.10.9.2
TrueNAS Scale internal NIC of 10.10.9.3

Ask:
I have an extra 2 port 10Gb ethernet card in both the TrueNAS and Proxmox servers. They will plug in directly to each other and not go through a switch.

I’m assuming the best use for these 2 ports on each card will be for VM-TrueNas communication. (If someone has a better recommendation, I’m all ears.)

How would I setup these 2 ports in TrueNAS Scale to take best advantage of them for my home lab?

10 Gig Networking Primer | TrueNAS Community is a must read, though I would reccomend a switch (better in the long run).

Thanks for the reply! Great info.

Let’s say I just want to connect directly Proxmox port 1 to TrueNAS port 1 and the same for port 2 for now until I get a 10Gb switch. Should I configure them as a Bridge, Link Agg, or VLAN?

Depends on what you want to achieve. Resource - LACP ... friend or foe? | TrueNAS Community might be helpful.

OK, great point. Let’s say for now I’m not worried if a port goes down as this is home and not business critical. So, let’s rule out LACP. Is there an advantage to having each matching set of ports (port 1’s) on a different subnet for some sort of independent functionality like 2 different subnets? Or setup a bridge or something else?

I guess I’m thinking I’d like to be able to present/share storage to the VM’s on the proxmox server and/or backup all proxmox vm’s to the TrueNAS server.

I would say there could be advantages, mainly from a security standpoint, but it would also add complexity.

Now, I am no SCALE user and as such I am not in the right position to help you but if it were on CORE I would suggest creating at least one bridge interface.
