Recommended SSD for my NAS OS

Hello everybody is there a particular SSD I need to be using for my NAS OS main system?

Or should I use something like an Evo 870 SSD. And are Sand disk SSD’s ok

I did order a bunch of WD red plus for my data

Thank you

I’m using an 8 year old 120gb SanDisk SSD… Works fine and no issues for 4 years of running truenas on it

Thank you sir just wanted to make sure. I learned the hard way that you can’t use just any discs for your data when you’re running a Nas

M.2? Get a 16GB+ intel optane m10 and live happily ever after

2.5"? Get a 120GB+ refurbished dc SSD and it should last you forever.

I have mixed experiences with bottom of the barrel 2.5" SATA SSDs. They will run and will run for years until you get a zfs error.

Happened to me with crucial and kingston.

I cleaned up your duplicate post @Robert_G

To add to @MSameer 's very good post, the “DC” in “refurbished DC” means a “datacenter” SSD - sometimes they’re denoted with those initials in the model name, like the “Intel DC S3500” - but they’re often found in large quantities at low prices.

The demands on the boot device are fairly minimal, but enough that a USB flash drive isn’t a good choice. But other than that, it’s pretty much “pick an SSD, any SSD.” Sure, datacenter varieties will likely last longer, but it really isn’t a demanding workload. And if you keep a current backup of your config file, loss of a boot device is pretty much a non-event.

My crucial bx500 boot drive barfed after a few years. My kingston a400 didn’t (mirror boot).

My kingston a400 used for apps barfed in a year.

That is why i said i have mixed experiences.

Point is: small datacenter ssds are cheap. I see no point in using something else.

And really, a config file backup is not enough. I have ssh keys which i need to sync back to TN when/if i reinstall.

Thank you I don’t know what happen to that first post after posting from my mobile I thought something happen to it so I posted again.

Thank you so much for all the great tips for a SSD for my Nas I don’t mind spending the cash as long as I’m getting good quality drives.

For my TrueNAS build, I prioritized endurance and power-loss protection over raw speed. A solid SATA SSD like the Intel D3-S4510 or Samsung 870 EVO gives more than enough performance for the OS. I also avoid using USB flash drives after running into reliability issues—they just don’t hold up over time with boot environments and updates.

FWIW, I recently tested some of the cheapest 120GB SATA SSDs with decent reviews I could as boot disks.

The Patriot Memory brand seemed fine and worked well.

Anyone else had good experiences with cheap boot SSDs? Maybe Silicon Power?

i didn’t see them in your Amazon region, but in my experience, stay away from SomnAmbulist ssd: the smallest size [ 60-120 ] are mSata disk assembled in a SSD enclousure with an adapter, they run hot as hell and die pretty fast.
Instead i have/have had Puskill - Transcend - Intenso disks that work well for low the price
