im not much more about nas just have a basic knowledge in truenas world. i build this server running for a year with an ordinary pcie sata a non HBA card, now i decided to replaced a real HBA card do i need to detached first the drives which part of the existing sata pcie or replaced without any configuration?
my NAS specs
gigabyte b550m ds3h
amd ryzen 5 5600g
64gig ram
1 nvme boot os drive
8 hdd 2tb each
silverstone nas casing
As long as your sata multiplier wasn’t doing too much sketchy stuff, moving to an HBA should basically be plug & play. TrueNAS doesn’t care how the drives are connected (simplification; unless something is critical wrong with existing setup) - it should be as simple as moving the drives from the port multiple to the HBA.
Note that the OP has not mentioned a port multiplier and not all SATA cards are disasters in waiting…
Still the replacement should be a plug and play exercise.
Actually not. ZFS does not care about ports or controlers, so replacing would equally work with an HBA on IR firmware, a RAID controller, or another SATA card.
But for safe functioning later on, you want a HBA on the latest IT or IR firmware—emphasis on LATEST.
