In my server I created a VM which runs perfectly. Then I added a second VM but this one continually locks up after a day or so. Both are running the same Fedora Server Edition 41. If I’m quick before the machine locks up I can see CPU_OUT_OF_SPEC messages and lots of errors in the kernel log.
My host CPU is an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2420 v2 @ 2.20GHz which has 12 cores. I’ve given 4 vCPUs to each VM so this shouldn’t overload the host CPU. The odd thing is it only happens to the second VM I added and I just can’t work out why.
The truth is that bhyve on FreeBSD 13 is temperamental, and no more work will be done on virtualization in CORE.
Recommend updating CORE to latest version, waiting for April 15, then upgrading to CE Fangtooth 25.04. It uses Incus for virtualization, and you can bring your existing zvols in. Just take a note of CPU/memory/device config of your current VMs.
The version of TrueNAS to use for virtualization and apps is CE. CORE can do some of that, but if there’s an issue, there won’t be bug fixes.
