Storage Expansion

Hello Guys,

So, i’ve a small NAS which has 8xWD SA510 2TB SATA SSD configured in RAID-Z2. I’m planning to expand the storage and i’m not sure what HBA card do i pick which can maintain the SATA SSD speeds for all the drives hooked. I already have LSI 9400-16i. Would that work fine with the SATA SSD or i need some other HBA? If there’s any other model which is more good, please let me know.

Any suggestions/advice is appreciated!

Thanks

The tried and tested solution is a 93xx HBA. 92xx is too slow for multiple SSD’s

Historically the 94+xx have been considered too new for reliable use. But others may wish to chime in here.

I see. Have seen several setups with 94XX and i bought it a few years back.

I’ve a question though. Like the onboard SATA (via PCH), the LSI HBAs are also designed the same way so that all port from the HBA card gives almost the same speed and the speed does not decrease for either of the drive connected to the HBA card, provided that its a direct connection to the SATA SSD, without involving a backplane or a SAS Expander? I mean same speeds across all the HBA interface, distributing equal speeds and not that one port gives more and the other less.

The 95xx also works well in SCALE.

Direct wired architecture is great and the theoretical ideal however you do get to a certain point when reality kicks in and once you’ve built your pool you are never realistically going to saturate those entire links. This is often where expanders can be utilised.

This guy does a really good job of explaining https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4e8kmuGm6o&t=338s

WHATTT? Is that for real? OMG. Have you tested any from the LSI 95XX series?

I have a few 9500-8e in production on SCALE.

Oh, yeah. That’s right. But generally, my question was regarding the improper speed distribution on the HBA Cards vs that on onboard SATA via PCH lanes. For example, the SATA ports via PCH always provides the same speed, no matter how many SATA SSDs are connected. So, does the HBA has same principle? I’m afraid if a port on the HBA may give more/less speed to some of the SATA SSDs connected to that particular port.

OMG. I watched this a couple of years ago but seems like i gotta watch it again!

WOW. Just looked at your specs and its so much new

They are specs of several systems I run we have others and they are using the 9500 along with some other things.
