TrueNAS 25.04.2 in July, MacOS Copy Offload, Snapshots over Tailscale | TrueNAS Tech Talk (T3) E032

On today’s episode of TrueNAS Tech Talk, Kris and Chris get set for 25.04.2, where “Virtualization Classic” returns. They’ll provide some further details to the change-over, and call out a specific non-Virtualization fix for MacOS for the Apple aficionados in the audience. Kris will hop on his soapbox about the poor bitrate of streaming video as both try to figure out why you can’t just pick up a Blu-Ray easily anymore, and sort out a couple viewer questions including a fix for replicating ZFS snapshots over Tailscale!

My thousand+ bluray/uhd collection agrees

These days i’m buying out of print blurays from second hand stores and thrift shops.

The main reason why I have Plex in the first place is to provide access to my media when out of my home or on my remote televisions. As it is, my movies are downmixed from the 5.1/7.1 audio mixes to a stereo mix for viewing on my phone, tablet, or office television. I hope to someday have a home theater setup.

Physical media collecting is now becoming a niche hobby. The only thing that I have gome 100% digital on is audiobooks, and there is a TrueNAS app called Audiobookshelf for that.

Same here - and here in Australialand we’ve got the added problem that Disney Corp are no longer releasing new releases on disc, it’s streaming or nothing. Like you, it’s been a lot more picking up stuff in second hand stores, eBay and overseas imports from Amazon.

For me it is good to see the comeback of SNMP. Specially before there was extensions and templates for Zabbix and Grafana. Now it is not updated at all. Good to check each SMART disk info, failure, network traffic… And to be added to our monitoring system.

Thanks for the shout out on macOS Server-side Copy

@kris if you disable userspace inside Tailscale you can’t use Exit Nodes and I think it affects Subnet routing as well. Basically if you change the defaults then you gotta add more tooltips and a guide

The best way IMO is what I’ve done since 23.10 and before, is basically run 2 versions of Tailscale, one with Userspace and one without, so you get the best of both worlds, and Tailscale has a 100 device limit, so it’s trivial if your server has both.
