TrueNas on ESXI

i want install truenas on my server HP 380 G9 14 BAY
CPU : DUAL INTEL XEON 2697 V3
RAM : 64 GB DDR4 ECC
STORAGE : 2 * 300 GB SAS 15K
8 * 3 TB SAS
RAID CONTROLLER P840 + BATTERY
DUAL POWER SUPPLY 1400 WATT

on raid 6 and create truenas under esxi its safe or not no HBA/Controller (PCI Passthrough for VM) just virtual disk sorry for my engilsh

No not save. Do not do this

whats the best install in bare metal with hba and creation vm on truenas in hba mode if sas hdd fail i can replace it via truenas

But explain to the poor guy: WHY!?

I did use FreeNAS under ESXi for several years, Dedicated PCIe SATA controller passed through. 4 Hard drives, 2 mirrors.

Never an issue. That data is STILL in my current main NAS.

So, YES, you CAN run TN under ESXi, if you do it RIGHT!

If you want to virtualize truenas you should definitely pass through a disk controller to the truenas vm, either the onboard controller or a dedicated hba card, not a raid-controller, not a raid-controller in hba/jobd mode.

Bare metal?

Do not use any RAID controller! (Or change the firmware to IT mode).

Disks need to appear as single disks.

ZFS does not work well with RAID controllers.
Replace your P840 by a plain HBA, and pass through to the TrueNAS VM to let ZFS manage a raidz2 in software.
If you really want to manage a hardware RAID6 with the P840 DO NOT USE TRUENAS.
