TrueNAS says 7200RPM but the disk is supposed to be 5400RPM, how?

Hey all,

My fresh NAS sure is making me a NAS expert or not lol

All the disks were supposed to be brand new 2024(x) WD RED 4x WD40EFRX (CMR) 5400RPM disks but one is actually a 2023 WD40EPRX (CMR), and everything seemed right.

According to the logs from last however, the WD40EPRX 7200RPM failed, TrueNAS tried to recover it but nope.
Before removing it, it had 49 read errors and 68 cksum errors.

While doing the scrub hoping to bring it back I noticed that TrueNAS is saying 7200RPM when it should be 5400RPM.

I did noticed one of the disks were like 10-15c degree hotter than the rest but I assumed it was my cooling sucking at it, and being novice did not help.

Some research here and there appears to accuse WD of selling 7200RPM NAS disks but labelled as 5400RPM requiring acoustic test to identify them.
Well, I only needed TrueNAS to tell me that haha

Not to mentioned the CMR/SMR scandal I only found out thanks to another post here.

The same seller also sells Seagate ST Ironwolf 3.5" 4TB 5900RPM, I wanna give them a try but cryptocurrency farmers have been passing off their used hard drives as new and selling them to consumers and retailers.

One of the feedback does say “reported as having over 65,000 hours of use” and seller fully refunded that buyer so things are real.

The retailer seems legit, 100% positive, 25k disks sold, I wanna believe the seller didn’t act unfair.

What disks am I supposed to buy then?? haha
I need to grab more WD RED 5400RPM disks now to match the rest but I wonder.

Thank you

I did contact the seller, no questions asked and I am getting a new disk with the new order, I don’t wonder the 100% positive feedback.

From what I gathered online, Toshiba N300 appears to be the sweet spot, no major scandal within its NAS line, only domestic.

But at least in Australia, they cost twice as much, WD RED 4TB is $183, Toshiba N300 4TB is $345.
This hobby is getting expensive lmao
