[TrueNAS SCALE Dragonfish 24.04.1.1] NFS Service Not Working?

Having a strange issue with NFS that I suspect is because I don’t understand something idiosyncratic about how SCALE works.

I’m trying to set up a couple of NFS shares that my Proxmox cluster will hook into.

I’ve set up a dataset using the Multiprotocol share type, and added an NFS share, but I’m unable to connect to it, even after rebooting TrueNAS. I’d really appreciate some help. I’m going to post my NFS share setup (TrueNAS-side) in the first reply, as this message is getting long now, but here’s the diagnostic information I’ve gotten so far.

The very first thing I did was try to list my NFS mounts via the console on the host, just to make sure they were there.

Okay, that’s not good. So, I looked around a bit more.
I’ve never had to really troubleshoot NFS before. (I’ve used another NAS to set up an NFS server with Proxmox as a client without a problem, and am using the same process here.)

That said, after some research, I think I’ve pulled the debug information that will be helpful for this. I just don’t know what to make of it.

The full information is below, but this jumped out at me: export failure. I’d like to see an actual log for what happened here, but I’m not sure where to go to get it.

I’ve also confirmed via a client running nmap that the NFS service is visible from other computers.

I deleted both shares, cleared the ACLs on the datasets, and redid the permissions.

I haven’t re-created the shares yet.

Still something wrong/that I don’t understand with showmount, but with no shares at least nfs-server.service isn’t complaining.

So, for the moment, my working theory is that I, at minimum, screwed up the share configuration. Still no idea if something deeper is wrong with the RPC … thing. Not really sure how that fits into all this.

EDIT 1: Okay. I’ve used the Create Share button available from the Dataset tab to create a new NFS share. Previously, I created the share from the Shares tab instead of using the widget on the Dataset page.

So, it didn’t fail export this time, but I’m still not able to see any of the shares in Proxmox.

I’m guessing at this point, but I assume the RPC is listening and only loads in the mounts when something tries to hit the server.

EDIT 3: Nope. Still can’t see the shares even on localhost, and not over the network.

I’m really lost at this point, and as I need NFS working to replace my old NAS, pretty much stuck with a non-working-for-purpose system.

A bit more troubleshooting info:

root@vectorsigma[/home/admin]# exportfs -r -v
exporting *:/mnt/TransferPool/AndromedaClusterStore/ISOs

So, it does know how to export the dataset as a share, but showmount still can’t see it.

I never saw this sort of issue with CORE, but I know it must have handled NFS very differently.

I could really use some help.

Solved. I’m now getting the correct output for showmount -e localhost as root.

NFS Settings window below. I had disabled NFS v3, as I don’t have any clients that use it. This is something I was able to do without a problem on my QNAP, so it didn’t occur to me that it might be a problem, but after doing more research last night, I ran across an older thread where someone else had a different RPC error because they had disabled NFS v3.

I’m going to file this as a bug report because this doesn’t seem like correct behavior. There was nothing in the docs I read about it. I believe that either it shouldn’t break NFS v4, or it should throw a warning that it’s going to effectively disable the NFS shares.
