TrueNAS scale - loosing LAN

Hello friends,

Need some advise. My TrueNAS loosing network after few reboot’s. It was working fine for few days (fresh installation), but after the last reboot it says: “The web interface could not be accessed. Please check network configuration.”. This is strange as the last time it was working fine.

I’m using Intel NIC, that should be 100% compatible with Truenas scale: “Gigabit Ethernet Converged Dual Port PCI-E i350-T2 Network Card for i350-AM2 Chip Intel Express X4, X8, X16”.

Before this NIC i was trying install Truenas with Realtek NIC. Had same issue, bought intel, but facing the same issue.

Strange thing is that i see correct configuration, please see attached files. It have correct static IP, GW, NS (please see images).

This is kind of 4th fresh installation over the last 1month. Every time ir works a bit, afterwards loose the network.

It appears that the Intel NIC is not being detected or initialized properly. The driver for the Intel NIC seems to load (Intel Gigabit Ethernet Network Driver appears in dmesg), but the interface itself (enp4s0f0) is not present in ip a or ifconfig.

How do i solve this issue? Don’t want to reinstall again, did it already ±4 times. Tried these versions:

24.10.0.1,
24.10.0.2,
24.10.1,

with both. Realtek and intel. Works for few days, after few reboots - no nic.

You sure the issue isn’t at your router? Try a different cable?
Looks like the nic setup in the cli is right…

You might also try removing quad9 namesever and just have the router address as the only dns,

Couple questions.

On the TrueNAS can you ping your default gateway (router)

The Nameserver, you have it set to the same as the gateway, is that correct in your setup? Won’t make a difference for pinging 8.8.8.8 but a question

On your PC, can you ping the truenas?

I can’t ping.
Neither from PC a TrueNAS, neither from TrueNAS to PC.

Nameserver is correct. It was working like that before with no problems.

I have no other problems with router. All devices works just fine.
I even tried to boot the same TrueNAS hardware from Windows SSD. It get’s IP from DHCP with no problems with Realtek as well as with Intel NIC’s. So it can’t be a cable as i’ve backed up two PC’s and transferred over ±1TB data to the TrueNAS. But, thank’s to idea, i’ve replaced the cable now, but it did not made any difference.

Even with a bad NS ping should work.

On your truenas console, click 3 and go into static routes.

Anything there?

static routes are empty, but as i know static route is not necessary because the network configuration (IP address, gateway, and subnet mask) should be sufficient for proper connectivity.

At this point TrueNAS can’t see device “enp4s0f0” (Intel NIC).

By the way, i just added windows SSD once again in to the same PC, booted from Windows SSD, LAN is working, no problems at all. Rebooted back to TrueNAS - no NIC :expressionless: no GUI.

So this is boiling down to nic driver problems for the card in question in Truenas?

This is very very strange. I’ve read that even “Realtek RTL8125B 2.5Gb” is now compatible with TrueNAS Scale. But this card also had same issue. It was working fine, but after some time it become unavailable. I’ve tried like 2-3 reinstalls and had the same problem.

Afterwards i bought an intel NIC “i350”. It is 100% compatible, but i face the same issue.

Based on that and other stuff we’ve seen, maybe report this to iX as a bug with details etc etc

Sounds like a nic/driver issue on the truenas side if it’s working perfectly fine on Windows on the exact same hardware

I’m not sure they have something like support for free users. I believe support is for paid enterprise products only.

Maybe you know how to contact with them?

Raise it on their Jira directly, normally you can raise it just through the truenas UI, but obviously if you’re not able to reach the UI, that will be slightly hard

Probably need to create a account, but you should be able to create a ticket from that and mark as a bug

Thank you for the link. Registered, created a ticket, waiting for reply.

That is strange. I have four of the TP-Link 2.5GB PCIe Network Card (TX201) – PCIe, two of those are in Truenas machines. Truenas picked those up no problem and when I run a full replication I get 2.2g between them on my LAN.

@alleykat that’s very strange. One more thing, Truenas have picked up this intel card with no problem (one time out of ±4-5 fresh installations), but after few days, after few reboots - it stopped.

I’m out of ideas. The cards have been running since June 4 2024 without issue.
