Just wanted to make sure Jeff’s geerling’s thread was not forgotten. TrueNAS Scale on Arm (2024 Thread) It's been a few years since the last serious thread about TrueNAS on Arm passed us by. See: ARM port of FreeNAS planned?? FreeNAS with Raspberry Pi. Is It Possible? Looking for: Fr…

In case anybody missed it, experimental builds here now: [image] TrueNAS on ARM - Now Available TrueNAS General I’ve patched TrueNAS Scale to run on ARM (aarch64). This release is unofficial and may lack security updates, so use it at your own risk. Download is here: ht…

[image] ROSE Data server (RDS) | MikroTik RDS is a high-performance, all-in-one storage, 100G networking, and container platform designed for enterprise environments. Featuring 20 U.2 NVMe storage slots and a special RouterOS Edition for Storage & Compute (ROSE). …

Not to mention slots for more ECC RAM, and being available in pink rather than green to match its name! Maybe for version 2? [image] MikroTik RDS2216 Inbound with 20x U.2 NVMe and 100GbE on Arm The MikroTik RDS2216 combines a 100GbE, 25GbE, and 10GbE switch with a 16-core Arm processor…

[image] etorix: Not to mention slots for more ECC RAM Does it, though? How important is caching in an all-NVMe system? Obviously it isn’t going to run TrueNAS, and if it did, it’d be missing the switch management aspect. But it really seems like they’d be better off working to integrate an…

I saw that device a few weeks / months ago. These are some of my questions / comments: Of course more RAM, or replaceable RAM in slots ECC RAM, after all, every last bit goes through the RAM, whether it is network packet or NVMe block It mentions 2 x M.2 SATA slots, can those be used for a larger…

[image] dan: How important is caching in an all-NVMe system? Fair point… I guess it depends what is required of the NAS. But if we were to put ZFS on it, I guess ZFS would at least want all of its metadata cached in RAM. With U.2 drives now exceeding 100 TB apiece and 20 U.2 drives in total …

Reading further, they use BTRFS, (in addition to what appears to be MD-RAID), on it: https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/spaces/ROS/pages/328059/RouterOS https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/spaces/ROS/pages/295239711/Btrfs Fortunately they don’t support RAID-5/6 on BTRFS, (which to this day is not listed a…

[image] etorix: I guess, however, that neither Mikrotik nor iXsystems are eager to go for such a merger Probably not, though HexOS suggests iX is interested in working with others. You’re right, of course, that this device isn’t ideal hardware for TrueNAS, even leaving aside ARM vs. x86–but …

[image] Arwen: Reading further, they use BTRFS Run for the hills. The SMB file sharing presently built into routerOS can only be described as primitive. I have no doubt that Mikrotik is working on something better but I’d give them at least a year or two before the biggest issues have been un…

The STH review is out! [image] MikroTik RDS2216-02XG-4S+4XS-2XQ Review A Better SwitchNASServer with a Catch In our MikroTik RDS2216-02XG-4S+4XS-2XQ we see just how close MikroTik ROSE came to making the ultimate switch, NAS, server, and VPN box Est. reading time: 21 minutes …

The STH video speaks for itself. If Patrick at STH comes away confuddled re: how this thing is supposed to work as a NAS, good luck to me or anyone else not extremely conversant re: MikroTik / routerOS terminal speak to make it happen. I agree that this is an interesting gateway / router to help r…
