TrueNAS SCALE server periodically freezes completely (console unresponsive) — seems triggered by large file transfers

I’ve been dealing with an issue with my TrueNAS SCALE server where it will periodically become completely unresponsive and requires a physical reset.

When it happens, the system is fully frozen — even if I connect a keyboard, mouse, and monitor directly to the server, the console interface is completely unresponsive.

Since I started tracking it, the uptime has varied quite a bit. Sometimes it will run fine for 20+ days, but other times it only lasts 2–3 days before locking up again.

One pattern I’ve noticed is that it seems more likely to happen during large file transfers, such as when I’m making a digital backup of a 4K UHD Blu-ray and the ripping program writes directly to the server.

Has anyone experienced something similar or have suggestions on what might cause this kind of full system freeze?

Have you used any specific compression ratios or dedupe at the dataset level? That would be the first place I’d look and if so try your transfer on a default non dedupe and lz4 dataset and compare. Outside of that I’d focus on hardware.

I don’t think so considering I don’t really know what either of those mean. The only thought I had was is if I have a setting somewhere that is preventing RAM from being utilized by the applications.

After some research I went into the bios and disabled C states. Not sure if there is anything else in the BIOs I need to change.
