U.2 Cable Help

Hello Guys,

I was looking for SFF-8643 to SFF-8639 U.2 cable and i found Amphenol RHS36-2582. But after lots of search, i couldn’t find the details on the official website and i’m not sure whether this cable supports Gen3 or Gen4 speeds. I’m worried cause all my U.2 Drives are Gen4. So, i really don’t want that just due to a cable, my U.2 drive runs slower than its actual performance.

Any help on this would be highly appreciated!

Thanks

There’s nothing fundamentally Gen 3 or Gen 4 about these cables: These are just plain, passive cables; they will carry over whatever is passed.

Are you sure on that? Cause I thought the same but I had to buy Gen4 riser cable for the GpU

The timing on Gen4+ is much more finicky than Gen3.

From what I’ve read it seems that you will experience transmission errors unless your cable has embedded retimers or other mechanisms.

What a mess. I’ll see what i can go with.

There certainly is no retimer in the cables.
If anything, the SFF-8643 end suggest these were designed in the Gen 3 era.

Which is where wiring details will matter. If plugged into a PCIe 4.0 switch or a retimer card, the cables may well work at Gen 4 (of course, the Gen 4 card is more likely to sport SFF-8654 than SFF-8643). If plugged into a passive bifurcation adapter, Gen 3 is probably safer.

Yes, and one of the conclusions in that thread

ANYTHING with copper cables and Gen4 or faster always needs an active component (if you’re out to get a configuration with 0 PCIe Bus Errors
