Unable to install TruNAS Scale/Core via USB Drive

Trying to install TrueNAS on an Ancient HP Tower running windows 7 Professional I found on the street(specs bellow). I downloaded and tried both SCALE and Core onto a usb 2.0 drive using Rufus. I went into BIOs and put the usb device as first priority for boot. With SCALE, it would give me a black screen with a white blinking dash in the top right. WIth Core, it would take me to Windows boot manager: “PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable”. Ive seen some sources say to enable/disable safe boot and something about ISO vs UEFI? Im lost D:

Specs:
HP Compaq 8100 Elite Convertible Minitower PC

  • CPU: i5 650
  • RAM: 2x3gb PC3-10600
  • Chip set: Intel Q57 Express
  • All USB ports are 2.0

8GB is the minimum RAM. That era should have 2GB or 4GB ram sticks. You need to go into the BIOS/UEFI and sort out booting. Look up your hardware and software manual for that model.

If you are burning Rufus, you only want BIOS. Guessing from age of machine.
Core isn’t being recognized or you don’t have the boot order correct.

Hi there, I just found a pair of DDR3 sticks laying around(2x4gb) and the system is on. I can seem to find anything useful in the bios in regards to sorting out booting. Could you help me out? Ive provided some pictures bellow of the bios.

Im also not sure how to burn Rufus for just BIOS. My rufus just shows BIOS/UEFI for target system. Im pretty sure I have the boot order correct.

Thank you

Bios pictures:
It seems im unable to upload pictures or links to this post so ive found an alternative. if you search “ish_3912651-2318005-16” it should give you an HP site which has the same bios as the one i have

Secure Boot Configuration : Enable or disable Secure Boot or Legacy Boot and select the Secure Boot key type.

Look for that and disable it.

Both descriptions above look like you are not booting the USB. Do you get a screen showing to hit F12 for boot menu upon start up?

You can try booting the USB on a different computer

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. In the Security tab of the setup it seems to be missing the Secure Boot Configuration. After System Security it just gives me Master Boot Record Security and Setup Security Level. Neither of which seems to give me an option to enable. Disable secure boot.

At the hp slashscreen I hit F9 to go into Boot manager and it lets me select USB. After pressing enter on USB it just gives me " Non-system disk or disk error, replace and strike any key when ready". This message repeats after i strike a Key.

I will see if i can borrow my brothers computer to try and boot the usb there. Is it also possible to just plug this HDD into this computer and Load TrueNAS on there then plug it back into the HP?

Hi there, I dont actualy know why I couldent install TrueNAS onto the HDD from the USB. But it works now. I just my brothers computer to load it on and I plugged the HDD back into the Hp and it works! Thank you.
