Update from Dragonfish-24.04.2.5 - Sept 2026

Good morning everyone,
I’m asking for help from anyone who can.
I missed the instructions about manually upgrading from Dragonfish-24.04.2.5.
Now, what if I wanted to get to the latest version?
I’m currently only using PLEX as an application, and in the datasets I’ve placed the files I usually transfer from a Windows PC via SMB.

Thanks

you usually cant jump straight from dragonfish to the newest train. trueNAS wants the hop path (dragonfish → electric eel / fangtooth / whatever the docs list for your target).

id snapshot / back up config first, read the release notes for each hop, and expect plex/apps to need a re-check after each step. which train are you aiming for, latest scale or staying more conservative?

At this point, perhaps it’s better to:
move all the files to another disk/PC and reinstall directly with the new version.
Could this be better and more secure?
I’d prefer to have a version that stays updated automatically (so I’d upgrade to the latest one).

You don’t have to move your files. Updates don’t touch storage disks, only the boot ssd.
The only issue you will most likely encouter is the migration of your plex app, since you’ve missed the automatic app migration of june 1st. 2025.
You can, as @nite_route already said, udpate from one major release to the next, or install the latest version fresh and import your config. Since you’re 3 major versions behind you may encounter issues if you try to import your old config file.
Just use the webui and update incrementially.

No version of truenas updates automatically. If an update is available you’ll get a notification (if you set them up) via e-mail or in the truenas gui.

Thanks for your help.
That explains the mystery.
I just ran the check and checked:
“Check for Updates Daily and Download if Available”
but it said there were no updates.

When in reality there’s a drop-down menu. So:
I go to the update section, choose the “ElectricEel” and “switch train” drop-down menus,
then proceed as per the interface?

Then continue the same way with fangtooth, and finally goldeneye?
Or do I have to download files manually to upload?

After each update, you have to select the next version from the drop down. When you reach 25.10 there are no more update trains, because they switched to update profiles:
Developer
Early Adopter
General
Mission Critial

Depending on profile you choose you’ll only get a notification when the next version is deemed fit for that udpate profile. If you choose the general profile you don’t get update notifications for beta or release candidates, so you will have to choose what you want. For normal users i’d say stick with the general profile.

Thanks. I’ll try updating soon.
Do I need to do something with Plex between updates? Or do I just remap the movie dataset to the app by reinstalling it?

24.04 to 24.10 switched the apps backend from kubernetes to docker. And since you missed the automatic migration deadline you will have to reinstall your Plex app. Depending on how you set the storage up on 24.04 it will be either easy or harder…
